Did anyone else's kid react this way? MMR related

DS just got his MMR last thursday (our pedi gives it anytime between 12-15 months) and holy shit, my kid is fucking miserable. It doesnt help that he's also on antibiotics now for a sinus infection (he started meds yesterday). He seemed fine last thursday to get the shot (just a runny nose), but then later developed the cough, goopy eyes/nose and whatnot, so I brought him in yesterday and they put him on amoxicillin.

I cant help but think most of this crankiness and crying is from the shot. Usually, when he gets sick, he just gets quiet/mushy...but this is crazy. Hes good for a few minutes here and there, but man...most of the time for the last few days, he's ridiculously crabby and it's definitely taking its toll and all of us.

Idk. Maybe it has nothing to do with the shot at all and its just a coincidence, but I cant say I've ever seen him this fussy/cranky and melting down at the drop of a dime. Anyone else's kid react to the MMR this way? Or am I way off for thinking the shot is responsible?

  • I will add just yesterday he spiked a little fever of like 100.1 but before yesterday, hasn't had a fever at all. We have been giving tylenol/motrin as needed. Which helps some, but hes still very moody. Much more than usual.

  • Interested in the responses here because I think J gets his MMR today. Ugh. A nurse at work who is a former ped's nurse told me that MMR does have a delayed reaction up to 7 days later.

  • @HilarityEnsued You could definitely. Be right about all of that, considering I just finished round 2 of antibiotics for a sinus infection and it was fucking miserable, so that much I do know. And I have noticed thatDS has been super gassy for the past day or so, which could totally be the amoxicillin doing a number on his belly. Poor kid.

In general, I guess it could just be coincidence then, considering around this age, kids tend to start with the tantrums/meltdowns and clinginess anyway.

Ive just heard lots of horror stories about kids having these awful reactions to the mmr, so I guess the "seed was planted" so to speak. But like you said, its probably much more likely that this is just cold related or developmental at this point.

  • @-auntie- True. Good point. He's got his top molars both coming in. Didn't even think of that.

Man, this shit is for the birds.

  • J had a reaction later but he was also a little sick when he got it. He broke out in a rash and had a low fever. This was a couple days to a week after the shot.

I hope he feels better soon! We also have a snotty nose here but praying it's just allergies

  • I wouldn't think a shot from almost a week ago would be causing a reaction, would it?

From what I've read/heard from others, the MMR tends to have a delayed onset of reactions for some kids.

C was horrible days 7-10 after the shot. Clingy, fussy, feverish. Of course, she goes to daycare so could have been sick too. Either way, better than measles!

Oh I said the same thing. I'll take temporary cleanliness and a fever over measles. Still just sucks to see my poor baby so miserable.

  • Mine had no negative reaction. Sorry he is feeling so awful. :(

Some kids act insane on Amoxicillin. I would attribute that to his behavior way more than the shots.

Yeah, good point. This is also his first time on antibiotics ever, so I really have no point of reference!

Yes, 7-10 days. Js rash appeared after office hours so I sent her a pic and she asked the ER docs at her work and they said it was from a viral infection (they didn't know about his shots being recent but that makes sense.)
