Fussy eater

One of my daughters has been fussy when it comes to eating solid foods.  Every time we sit for breakfast, lunch & dinner she cries and only takes a few spoonfuls of food. I try and distract her by reading to her but it only works for so long.  Any suggestions on what I can do to get her to eat better? On a side note she absolutely loves eating puffs!

Re: Fussy eater

  • I did purees for a while, but now I just plop food on his tray and let him have at it.  Usually while I'm cooking dinner, and it's kinda fun, like he's cooking with me :-)

Just curious... if she is less fussy when feeding herself, why do you feed her at all? I rarely feed Rhys unless it's something he can't pick up (like yogurt). Even then, I will put yogurt on the spoon and then hand him the spoon.

  • Mine's a fuss too. Grant is a really great eater so this threw me for a loop. He will self feed more often with squeeze packet and I put pieces of food on his tray that he is doing better with. I don't stress about it because I don't have the time or energy. He nurses 4-5 times a day still, too and he is 24 pounds so I think we're ok.
  • She hasn't mastered picking up food & putting it in her mouth yet. I'm feeding her the solids from the jar so if I give her the spoon I can only imagine everything going all over the place. What do you feed them that they feed themselves?
  • @pinottoparenthood‌ honestly it depends on the day some days she won't feed herself at all she is so unpredictable..it also depends on the time of day..mainly breakfast time I feed her then she gets mad and I let her finish was she is going to..idk what it is about morning it's difficult to get her to eat

Ugh that's rough :-( I can't imagine... my child is constantly binge eating haha.

She can't master it if she never gets to practice. Try giving her something you know she likes in a size she can pick up herself (i.e. if she likes peas from a jar, give her some actual peas...smush them a bit the first few times if you're worried about her choking) and try to get past the food going everywhere image. It will happen. It will wash off. You will get through it, and she will learn to eat on her own. :) Good luck!

I don't give strips, I cut things up into little bite-size pieces... chicken breast, bits of ground beef, pork tenderloin, baked potato, peas, diced carrots, basically whatever we are eating for dinner, I give him a little bit of -- or if he eats at a different time than us, I keep frozen chicken breast strips, meatballs, little raviolis, and alexia potato puffs in the freezer and just nuke a few of them for him to eat.

It took James a while to get the hang of this, but I started with puffs and now for snacks he also has cheerios, goldfish crackers, graham crackers... see above for the foods that I cut up and dump on his tray for meals!

  • @jamie52005 agree with PP's. People who do baby-led weaning start with strips because 6-month-olds can't pick up small pieces yet. At this point, your baby should have the pincer grasp down pat, so she can pick up little pieces.

@tryingtostaypositive We let Rhys feed himself with a spoon. Say he is eating yogurt. I will put a little on his spoon, then hand the spoon to him. He will pull the spoon into his mouth. Then I take the spoon back and put on some more yogurt. He does make kind of a mess on his face and hands, but it's not too bad. He doesn't usually try to throw the spoon anymore because he has learned that he wants to eat what is on it. And babies are messy! It's a pain, but they have to learn sometime!
