Measuring ahead?

I'm curious if measuring ahead (by belly measurements with a tape measure done by your ob/mw) means anything? Does it necessarily mean your baby is bigger? Or is it more a function of baby's position, mom's size, etc.?

I have measured ahead by belly (but also by ultrasound at 29 weeks) my whole pregnancy and I'm just curious if this baby will be big. Last pregnancy I measured "right on" & my 39+1 baby was 7lb8oz. For those who measured ahead, did you have a bigger baby? Or have your baby earlier? For those who did have a big baby, how did you measure?

I measured size huge with my first. He was only 7 lbs 2 oz. They actually did a U/s at 37 weeks bc they thought he was big.. Nope under 4 pounds in the 3rd %. He came at 42 weeks

I measured right on with #2 but gained half the weight and baby was 7 lbs.

I think it depends how you are carrying.

  • At 34 weeks I was measuring at 38 weeks so I went for a growth scan. Baby was only 5lbs 4oz at the 36 week scan and then my belly measurement went down to measuring at 35 weeks. We figured the kid was sticking out his/her butt and made me measure way bigger! So I think it has a lot to do with baby's position! I go tomorrow for my 38 week appointment and feel no bigger so we'll see if the belly grew!

  • I've measured 2 weeks ahead all along by US and they just say that he is likely bigger. They now have told me I have GD and it could cause him to be bigger so we are watching my sugar. Other than that they don't seem concerned. No one has ever measured my stomach. They've felt for positioning and how far up my uterus reaches though.

    Good luck! I wouldn't worry.

Last appointment I was measuring 2 weeks bigger by the belly measurements (28w measuring 30w) and the ultrasound showed the baby is actually on the smaller side (41percentile) so you really can't go by the belly measurements
  • It really has more to do with how baby is positioned and how you are built.  I've measured a week or two behind in all of my pregnancies.  My last baby was 10 pounds.  This baby was "large" at our 19 week ultrasound.  But I have a very long torso so I measure and carry small.
  • Could be size, could be position, it's definitely not "readiness" related.  A 6 month old the size of a 1 year old is still only a 6 month old, kwim?

  • Fundal height isn't a very good indicator of baby size. I've measured far ahead the entire pregnancy and my fluid level and kid have been dead on. My last ultrasound I was measuring 6 weeks ahead by fundal height but my fluid was at 15 (10-20 my MW considers normal) and LO was in the 52nd percentile. I'm having a follow-up next week to confirm nothing has changed but it seems to be just the way I'm carrying.
  • Update: I delivered on Tuesday at 37w 6 days after my water leaked.  He was 8 pounds 4 oz so he actually was a bit big for gestational age.  For me at least, the belly measuring ahead happened to be right!

lucky you! i am hoping this baby takes after her sister (39wks/came on her own) and not her brother (40+3/induction) and we get to meet her sooner! at my last check up i was measuring 28.5 centimeters at 26 wks and with both other babies i needed to have growth ultrasounds due to measuring small. with ds, i was a couple centimeters behind but u/s said he would be over 8lbs- he was 7lbs. with dd, i was measuring even smaller and she was showing up 5lb 11oz at 38wks. she was 5lbs 15oz at birth. if this is a big baby, i will be shocked! haha.

congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby!
