Question about IUI and failed FET

edited March 2014 in Success after IF

Sooooo I am enjoying a huge glass of wine with sherbet in it after I got the dreaded phone call that the Lone Range did not make it.

DH's insurance covers 6 IUI's so we figure why not. DH's last sperm analysis was not horrible back in February so we figure what could it hurt. If that does not work we might consider donor sperm.

Questions: I was in a bit of an emotional upheaval when I talked to the RE this after.... what is involved with an IUI. He told me to come in on CD3 but that is as much as I got...

At this point we have had a failed IVF and 2 failed FET's with one successful FET.... do you think I might have a egg quality issue as they were all expanding blast when put back in?

If you have any thoughts/suggestions that I may or may not be forgetting please just let me know.... BTW I have not drank in a good 8 months :) The last time I drank was while to get through and online CE class!

Re: Question about IUI and failed FET

  • I am so sorry that the Lone Ranger didn't make it.  :( IF is so unfair.  I hope that you enjoyed your glass of wine last night, you deserved it.

IUIs are pretty simple, depending on what med routine they have you on (or natural.)  For mine, I had a scan on cd3, took femara days 3-7 or 5-9, started EOD scanning usually at day 11.  Once I had a couple good sized follicles, I would do an ovidrel trigger shot, and have the IUI 1-2 days later.  On the day of the IUI, MH would come in with me and give a sample.  It would get washed and prepared while I got my scan.  Then we would hang out till the sample was ready, and head upstairs for the big deed.  My first 2 were very similar a pap smear in terms of pain and such.  My third one for some reason hurt much worse.  But they just deposit the sample where it belongs, and have you lie still for about 10 minutes.  Then on about your day.

If you have covered IUIs, there is certainly no reason not to do it, if you can afford the time off work for the appointments (or your office has hours that are convenient with your schedule, or you can go during lunch or something.)

I'm sorry I don't have any advice regarding your other questions.  Have you asked your RE if he has considered egg quality issues?

  • Thank you for the response! I was a little in shock yesterday and was surprised I got as many questions out as I did. I will send him an email today about the egg quality.

  • Sorry, 1 more question: do you have to be on POI after the IUI?

  • Is that progesterone?

I didn't have to, because my levels were always good.  I didn't take anything after the IUI.

Same here. Prometrium for me. And, if my lining was thin, I'd take estrace too. In comparison to the monitoring for IVF, the IUI was much less involved. Maybe 2-3 monitoring visits (in addition to day 3) and the trigger was subq. Additionally, I didn't feel nearly as bloated during stims and between trigger and the procedure. Plus, no bed rest at all!

  • I've done three failed IUI's, but mine were with injectable meds because I have issues ovulating on my own. With the second two IUI's I begged my doc to give me progesterone to just help boost my chances since miscarriages run in my family and I had one when I was 18. Long story short, after the IUI's they let me take progesterone suppositories. Kind of a messy thing to deal with but overall anything to boost our chances right?! GOOD LUCK with your IUI's!
