Does anyone here meditate? It's something I've been thinking about on and off for awhile. I need help turning my brain off at night, and just feel like overall it could do me some good. I'd love to know about other's experiences. How'd you start? Did you go to classes or learn on your own? Are there websites, books or other recommendations?
Yes some nights before sleep. I can't really do it on my own so my husband and I play guided meditations from iTunes (free through podcasts) either through our phones or our laptops while in bed. I usually only listen to 10 mins or so. Sometimes they are really relaxing and sometimes their voices are strange or their background music weirds me out. I just kept trying different guided meditations till I found my favs.

I wouldn't say we meditate, but I use different things to relax myself and starting doing the same for DD before bedtime to relax her and we both love it. Dim lights, relaxation music (I have a few pandora stations we love) scented lavender candles. DD gets completely relaxed and will fall asleep peacefully within 10 minutes. I need to do it to calm my nerves, relax my brain etc. I guess it's our own form of mediation.
I don't meditate really. But when I'm having trouble settling down and relaxing, I will lay down and tense up my entire body. Then I release the muscles literally one at a time while I breathe. I start at the toes and work my way up. It sounds wonky but I can feel the tension leave my body and half the time I fall asleep before I hit my shoulders.
Tha'ts not weird - that's actually what I've been doing! I learned in in high school gym! It used to work in the past but I find my mind is still racing.
Yes. My Dr recommended it for anxiety. She gave me a copy of a guided meditation that her yoga instructor made. They sell them st the yoga studio. Maybe check out a yoga place?

I do yoga and in class we meditate for 5 - 10 minutes at the very end. It is much more relaxing when I have an instructor guiding me but I do it at home when I feel really overwhelmed. You can try and look up videos on youtube, I'm sure there's lots of guided meditation videos there.
This is exactly what I did during pregnancy to prepare for labor.
I'm no guru, but I found that for meditation to be really effective, you should actually be doing it throughout the day. It's hard to shut out the world like that. It needs to be habit if you're just going to "tune out" when you want to sleep. Try using it when you don't think you need it. First thing in the morning is a great time.
This makes a lot of sense. Thank you! Sorry for my delayed response - mobile bump isn't working for me.
I'm not big on guided meditation -- I just can't relax with noises -- but I read this really amazing book early last year and it as it's teaching you about mindfulness and mindful meditation, it walks you through the exercises so that you can practice while you read. It's great in applying to family life too:
