We had a fire on the farm this weekend. After doing some controlled burning, we gave ourselves time to relax since a huge rain storm was supposedly moving in. Well, Mother Nature had other plans, and the prevailing winds turned southeast pushing the storm further south of us. Unfortunately for us, some smoldering tinder was stirred back into flames.
DH was on the phone with a client, and noticed the front pasture was smoky. He turned to look out the window to the back pasture, and took off like a shot. I was resting on the couch when he flew by with his pants half fastened. DH isn’t one to hustle without very good reason, so I knew it was serious. I jumped up, and raced to the back door to see what was going on. I saw the fast moving flames, and adrenaline kicked in. I pulled on my work boots without thinking, and ran outside to help. We ran to stomp out the most dangerous areas; then, I ran to the outdoor spigot and surplus hose storage bin. I connected the three 75’ hose sections, and somehow managed to drag them to the orchard area. DH is still stomping like a mad man across the pasture, while I worked the hose.
It took about 30 minutes, but we managed to put out all the flames without losing any property (including valuable food plants or trees) or allowing the fire to spread to neighboring properties. We did continue saturating the surrounding areas for another 45 minutes to be on the safe side.
Today, I’m pretty sore from running around and exerting myself, so it’s fortunate that I have a pre-natal massage and chiropractic adjustment already scheduled for this afternoon.
In retrospect, we’re very lucky. I didn’t realize at the time how much danger our home and property were in because the adrenaline rush forced me to focus on the job at hand. After the surge, I pretty much collapsed in tears of relief.
Also, I’m not much of a runner (even when I’m not pregnant), so for me to move like that…well, let’s just say there was some self-discovery happening at the same time.
Thanks for reading. Not sure why I posted this. Maybe a little AWish, but I guess I’m still feeling some residual anxiety, and I need to get it off my chest.
TLDR: fire on the farm – helped DH put it out – all is well in the end – pregnant ladies can run!
