allergy question peanut/shellfish

The other thread reminded me of a question I've been wanting to ask you ladies.

At this stage can babies have a reaction from coming into contact (via you through touch contact) to things like peanuts and shellfish? I feel like I might be over doing it but anytime I eat peanut butter or shrimp, I make sure to wash my hands super well.

Edit: I may have misworded. I'm more curious about touch contact since these seem to be the ones that cause the most issues if you are super sensitive to them.

  • I have food allergies so I consulted with a couple different docs about what, if anything, I needed to do for LO. They said there's no evidence to suggest that mom restricting her diet during BFing affects the later development of allergies, and anaphylactic reactions to breastmilk are very, very rare. Babies may get fussy and have problems digesting certain things that pass to breastmilk (hence some moms being on elimination diets), but that's not really an allergy in the sense peanuts or shellfish would be, it's a sensitivity.

  • Thanks @SuzyQq02‌! I personally don't have any sensitivity to certain foods, but dh had a reaction to shellfish last year.

I plan to ask dr google and pedi next week on it too because I'm curious as to how/why peanuts particularly can be by touch.

  • DD1 has severe peanut/tree nut allergy, but she never had a reaction to things passing through breast milk. Her first severe reaction that required an ER trip was at 3.5. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it until you have a reason to. Usually, a reaction won't happen after the first exposure. Washing your hands is sufficient--I wouldn't modify your diet unless LO shows signs of intolerance.
