Re-intro and weaning question

I guess weaning is the right word...

Formerly pammasu.  Changed my name with the new kiddo for more privacy.  Due with #2 at the end of October.

Just got home from DS's 9 month appointment.  The pedi mentioned that he would like to see milk intake cut down to about 16oz per day.  Right now he gets 28.  Any suggestions on how to cut it down?  The doc mentioned dropping one bottle, but I feel like that's a huge drop since he seems to enjoy his 28oz.  Also, has anyone else heard this?

He also eats oatmeal w/ fruit for breakfast, a tub of puree for lunch/dinner.  We're working on transitioning to table foods rather than purees. So maybe more food?

Re: Re-intro and weaning question

  • Welcome back!!

No help here about cutting back his milk intake.  B is still drinking 40oz a day plus solids.  I can't imagine trying to cut him back at all and certainly not down to 16oz.  He'd freak.

  • Same as @Murphie82‌, I can't imagine limiting my tank of a baby. He would flip out. Was there a reason weight wise the doc would say this? I have honestly never heard of limiting milk or formula intake before a year. I would ignore him or switch practices unless he have you a good reason!
    Welcome back and congrats!

  • Welcome back!

I am thinking the same as @Murphie82 and @cailkat80.  B drinks about 40 oz a day plus solids.  He would lose his mind if I cut him back... especially back to 16!  16 just seems like so little.  Any reason for such a dramatic drop (I mean down from 28 to 16 is about a 40% decrease - that seems extreme)?

  • So apparently I wasn't paying enough attention.  (This is why DH comes to appointments).  We are supposed to cut back to 16 oz by 12 months.  I have about a month worth of frozen milk and we supplement with formula.  The pedi said to finish the formula we have then just give him the frozen milk and when we run out at 11 months to just start him on whole milk.  I still can't imagine him dropping down to 16oz any time soon, but I'm relieved to not have to figure out how to make that happen right away!
