Old toys = lead paint?

Ok I've never started a discussion before, but I haven't seen this one yet. My mom is cleaning out her basement and called me to ask if I want her to throw out the toys we grew up with. She is concerned about lead paint. Does anyone know if there is a way to test these things? Most of the things that are still in good condition are from Fisher Price type companies, but some of it is wooden stuff.

Nothing is older than 30 years old so anything manufactured in the United States should be fine, but how do we know about anything else?

  • They make lead tester kits that can be purchased at your local home improvement store. I'm not sure if they would work on toys or not, but you can always ask an associate and do a bit of research on them and see if it works for painted toys.

My MIL is always giving us tips from when my husband was little - i just kept them until DS was older and wouldn't put them in his mouth (metal tractor, some cars mostly). For LO, those things will go up to his room so she won't have access.

ETA: evidently I didn't get enough sleep last night and words are hard

  • As far as I know lead was banned from paint back in 1978. So any toy that is newer than that should be safe :)

The testing kit seems like a good idea if you aren't sure of the age though.
