6 weeks pregnant- new job

Hi ladies:)
I applied for and accepted a new job before I found out I was pregnant and will be starting the new job during my 7th week. The two people I interviewed with actually spoke to me about people in the past that had gotten pregnant and quit or did not fully commit to the job and so now I am really worried about the whole situation.
Anybody been in this situation before? Any advice? No "morning" sickness yet...I really hope it doesn't start during my first week on the job. I know they are expecting me to hit the ground running.

My current company is also wanting to throw me a party on the last day...everyone wants to go out and wish me a farewell. I normally have several drinks during these types of events and have no idea what I'm going to say when people want to buy me drinks and I'll have to turn them down, especially since it will be so out of the norm for me. I'm very early on in the pregnancy and I really don't want people to know.

Re: 6 weeks pregnant- new job

  • Make the excuse that you aren't drinking because the new job starts early tomorrow and you want to be at your best for it.  As for the new company, never been in that situation.  If you do start to get sick I would be honest with them as soon as possible, so they don't just think you love the bathrooms.  Good luck!

  • I think you just need to be honest with your new employer once you feel comfortable sharing the news. Discuss a plan with them to make the time you are on maternity leave to go as smoothly as possible for the Company and re-emphasize your commitment to the job.

  • I have never had an issue hiding my morning sickness, but I guess it depends on your environment. I mean, I have left a meeting before to go puke in the bathroom, but you just gotta put your BGP on and get on with the day. I have never once, in either pregnancy, laid out of work with m/s. Get a script for Zofran, wear sea bands (and long-sleeves), get some mints, and get on with it. I mean, if you are so sick, you need to be hospitalized, that is one thing, but basic m/s shouldn't keep you from doing your work, IMO.

When you are ready to tell, just be open and honest. You won't be eligible for FMLA benefits - the one that protects your job for X number of days/weeks, so you need to take that into account and be pre-pared for them to re-act in the company's best interest. They can't fire you or anything, but they could give you a different set of responsibilities. I think it is also good to have a plan for leave (those can change, but still a formal plan helps). I did with my last, and will with these two, have a plan in hand to give my boss when I tell him about my "expected time off" and when I will return FT.

No advice on the party, really, can you maybe go early and talk to the bartender/server and ask that you get tonic waters in a low-ball glass with lime all night? I fake drink wine really, really well. Sit down dinners are harder, but do-able.

This isn't strictly correct. While your new employer can't fire you because you're pregnant, they don't have to allow you to take maternity leave or hold a position for you when you return since you're not covered by FMLA yet. You likely will not be covered by the company's short term disability policy either, so expect to take unpaid leave if your company allows you to take any leave at all. I'd wait as long as possible to tell your new employer; show them you're fantastic, make a great impression, and do everything you can to make sure they want you to come back.
  • My advice would be to just do what you normally do at the job.  Take it seriously, work hard and create a good reputation for yourself as a hard working and serious employee.  I actually think it was kind of crappy for the employer to say that about past employees, regardless if it was/ is true.

    I didn't have morning sickness so I can't help with that-sorry.

Tell your current co-workers you are taking medication and are not allowed to mix it with alcohol.

  • As far as the drinking...just tell them you're trying this new diet and you can't have alcohol. Or you can say you're on antibiotics and you can't drink.
  • I started a new job at 7 weeks pregnant and MS had just started. I had to tell my boss around 9 weeks because I was throwing up several times a day.

I worked for a staffing company and did intake interviews, so I would have to excuse myself to throw up. She asked me why I kept leaving an interview to use the bathroom and that it was very unprofessional. So I told her I was pregnant and sick. I asked her not to tell anyone else because it was so early, but she told anyway and the office knew within a few days.

I was only working a temp position for 6 months so long term plans were not an issue. Good luck!

I took a new job in January, I'm now 7 weeks pregnant and won't be telling my boss until I am good and ready (about 12 weeks along, after it get back some important blood work). I told everyone at my last job when I was pregnant the first time, and then got some bad news about my baby. So this time, mums the word until I know we don't have the same problems. I've just decided I've got until May to impress the pants off my boss. I carry a tin of wintergreen mints to help combat the queasiness (so far so good). The thing I am having a hard time explaining away is how tired I feel, and consequently look. I can only say 'just not sleeping well' so many times. But oh well. Do the best you can to show them your are all about your job and that you will be a rockstar for them.

  • When it comes to the party say your one medication. Seems to work for me
  • Thanks for all your great advice and support:)
I think I will hold off on telling the new boss until 12 weeks and just try to show them how dedicated I am until then. The mints are a great idea to have close by if MS gets bad.
