TMI: Waxing?

So the time has come when I can no longer see my lady bits in order to shave. The thought of just letting it go for the next several months bothers almost as much as waxing does so I think I'm going to go with waxing. :| But I have some questions.

It's about to get personal up in here:
Where do you go to get this done? (Because I have no idea.)
What do I ask for? There are different types, right?
How often do you go?
How awful is it?

  • Oh I am interested too! Tmi but I had an ingrown hair that hurt but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't see it. I made my husband help me fix it. Poor guy!

  • TMI but my hubby now takes care of the down stairs. It doesn't bother him at all amd he's good at it. He also shaves my legs and does pedicures. I don't feel comfortable with other people down that way even though I have had kids before. I tried getting waxed once at a salon and it was too much of a bad experience. Def leave a nice landing strip as you don't want to be rubbed raw there!
  • Heads up wall o text because I'm on my iPad. I've been going since just before I got pregnant because I'm too lazy to maintain it on my own. I actually asked on the local board for my are on TB for suggestions on where to go near where I live and found a great place that specializes in waxing. There are different options. I started with a "heavy bikini" to start with. You can keep your panties on for that one, so that's nice for the first time or two while you get comfortable with it. I'm up to a partial Brazilian at this point (leaves just a small strip, but takes everything else). I go every 4 weeks or so for now because I haven't been doing it long yet, it's usually 4-6 weeks depending on your preference. It's not that bad IMO. I did the heavy Brazilian for the first time last time and it hurt more just because she was getting more into the sensitive areas, but the pain goes away almost as fast as it comes. I prefer hard wax. It's more gentle (doesn't use the strips).

Haha at least he did it! MH would help but it might traumatize him. Little does he know about what's going to happen in July. Lol!

  • So I've been getting full brazilians since before I was pregnant because shaving causes too much irritation and razor burn plus I prefer waxing.

    1) I go full Brazilian which is completely bare but that's what I prefer. It's red the first day but then is fine and I don't have to go back until 5-6 weeks. But as other ladies said, you can do a partial Brazilian, a landing strip or bikini wax. If you have never had one, you may want to ease into it. Personally, I would be rid of it all and you have less to worry about.

    2) I go to a salon that has a spa so they do waxing, nails, facials too.

    3) I would find a place that uses hard wax. It's better than the strips and you won't have to go back as soon.

    4) If you have never had one or haven't had one in years, it's going to hurt the first time. Maybe even more than usual because you are pregnant and my my technician says some women become more sensitive to waxing in general while pregnant. I would discuss this with the technician.

    5) DO NOT trim before getting a wax. If you think trimming the hair short will make it easier for them or less painful, you are wrong. They will have to use more wax to get the hair strands to completely come out and if they can't, you will have to come back sooner because the hair they couldn't fully pull out will grow back.

  • I did it for a while a couple years ago.

Start with a bikini wax. I would only recommend Brazilian is you are feeling adventurous and do not mind somebody all up in your backdoor. They will ask you what you want, hair, strip, patch etc.. or no hair.

I went to European Wax Center, they have them all over and are good, clean, professional. I actually asked my sister for a recommendation as she is in the hair/nail/make-up/waxing business.

Every 4 to 6 weeks i believe is the time frame.

It's really not as bad as you think. The first time is the worst and it's mostly cause you don't know what to expect. It's not as weird as you would think, i have always had some one friendly but professional.

You do need to take care of it, managing strays, and exfoliating the area to deal with the ingrown hairs.

If i had the money and it didn't anger my skin to do it as often as needed (i have the most sensitive skin ever) i would do it all the time.

DH used the trimmers on mine yesterday since I couldn't see the important parts... I got the upper part. haha

I need to teach him how to do the toes next!  I am not a big fan of going bald down there, so the trimmers have been my resort for the past 12ish years.  Before that, I used NAIR.

  • Thanks, girls! I know I definitely don't want to do full Brazilian but I might just start out small with a bikini wax, like PPs said. Still nervous though!

  • I thought my DH was gay and I was excited to have a "gal pal" when I first met him. He knows how to wax, shave, trim, manicure, pedicure, etc.... He even does interior decorating and is a shopping addict. I get yelled at for when I don't match but I don't care. I'm more of the "pants wearer" lol. We currently have 3 DDs and he does pedicures for them and face masks. Lol. He calls himself metro - sexual.
  • This is great info! I have been thinking about it, but I'm nervous about finding a good place to do it.

  • A new, nice waxing place just opened up near me. And your first wax is 50% off. I was debating going and now I think I'll go for it! I currently shave everything, so I was going to do the full brazilian. But what is it you ladies like about a landing strip? Just personal preference?

  • My hubby shaves and I shave. If no one has hair then it's skin rubbing against skin, ouch. We take turns on who has to leave something behind to prevent "burns". I love being completely naked down there. It makes me feel super clean and sexy.
  • I second or third whoever said to go somewhere that uses hard wax. It does make a difference. Some places will do an "extended bikini" so it's more than just the sides but not all gone. It's my favorite because I find the most painful part of a brazillian wax is right over the top of my pubic bone. The nerves there are closer to the surface or something & it hurts so bad.
  • I'm in the same boat!! I go in on Friday and I'm getting a full Brazilian! Eekkkk!! I'm very nervous!! Just fyi u have to let it grow out 4-6 weeks to get the best results!! Wish me luck too!!

I like leaving a little there, because let's face it, some hair is actually good for you in that area, just not so much you look like an amazon (something to do with reducing irritation during sex and possibly helping to keep things out that shouldn't be in that area, similar to why you have eye lashes and eyebrows).  Also, I'm not a little girl and I've hit puberty.  Why would I want to look like I haven't?

Honestly I don't think the hair down there serves any purpose now thay we bathe regularly and wear clean underwear. My eyelashes ans eyebrows keep sweat out of my eyes while I'm running. I don't really have the same concern about other areas... plus, sex feels way better without all that hair getting in the way, IME.

  • I've been sugared bare several times and I think that the 'landing strip' area is the most painful part of the process.  I think when I start going again I'm going to have them leave that, because I do think it looks nicer, and again, ow.

  • I had a Brazilian once. I went to the same salon I went to for hair and nails. It was definitely awkward, but it didn't hurt all that much. It was pretty expensive (about $75) and I had stubble in less than a week, so it wasn't really worth it to me to have it done again. I know hair thins out over time with waxing and doesn't grow back as fast, but I don't have that kind of extra cash. Right now I'm just shaving or just not caring. I've used Nair in the past and that worked out well, so I'll probably do that when its bathing suit time.

  • I am a huge fan of brazillian. I have only ever had these and been doing it for years (not every 6 weeks, sometimes/often I slack). I feel MUCH better when I have nothing underneath - so much cleaner.

It honestly doesn't hurt that bad, I have VERY sensitive skin and have only had the strips and it is irritated for a day but oh well - shaving is awful for me I get the worst pain from that growing in/razor burn.

I plan to do it for looks partly but mostly so when things are going on down there (bleeding etc) I can feel cleaner and not worry about hair. Its worth it.

  • Thanks for the post! It's been on my mind too! Nervous that the extreme pain may put me into labour! Lol. Again thanks for the post and everyone's feedback put me at ease!
  • The pain isn't thaaaaaat bad.  Just take a Tylenol ahead of time and you'll be all right.
