Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

tubes are in and are working.... but we have 6 ear infections since

Has anyone else had the issue where your child has had tubes and  keeps having ear infections? his tubes are still in and they are still working because his ear is draining now but we have had 6 ear infections since his tubes this counts number 14 since hes been 4 months old and hes now 16 months. We've done the chiropractor, and I keep taking him, we have done the ear drop antibiotics. Im lost for words the next step is his adenoids which I understand if it fixes the problem I need to do it but at the same time I hate to do another surgery. Anyone have any sugestions of other things I can try? im so thankful hes so good with them and still sleeps thru the night and is a happy kid. the only way I know he has them is if his ear is draining.

  • Yes! Every time that he has a cough or runny nose now, we start the drops. At least he's not on oral antibiotics (which is what I keep telling myself). Our doctor said that he will likely need a bigger set of tubes and the adnoids taken out by fall. But, for now, I am just happy the usual 10 day course of meds is down to 3 days of drops.

  • Sorry-unfortunately I don't have any other suggestions for you. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone!
  • My son is 13 but he had the same problem but has grown out of it now. We had to push to get him allergy tested. He had 5 sets of tubes, adenoids removed, almost weekly appointments at the ENT to have his tubes suctioned/cleaned. After all that, he still kept getting ear infections. I pushed and I mean pushed to get the allergy testing done. They finally agreed!! Turns out he is allergic to dust mites, mold, cats, and dogs. We had/have cats! Our solution was to bathe the cat. The cat at the time just went to the groomer every week. The mild allergy causes extra mucus/fluid which pooled in his ears. Then the fluid wouldn't drain properly even through his tubes because they clogged which is why we went once a week to have them suctioned. We also got a waterproof mattress cover so I could wash and bleach it since it is impossible to get rid of all dust mites. At least the place his head was the most could be cleaned easily. Once we took care of those 2 allergens the ear infection dramatically tapered off. He had 50+ ear infections by the time he was 5.
  • Thank you every one for the advise. Im glad im not the only one my next step is to try tee trea oil and vegetable oil as an ear drop. They say that works to and its not an antibiotic.
  • How old was he when he was tested for allergies? Was it painful for him to be tested?
  • My son had allergy tests done.  For him he just had blood drawn just like you would.  He did really well with it.  He was 15 months at the time.  He also got tubes at 10 months but has been infection free since.  I hope you you get your answers.  Good luck!
  • I don't think it was painful for him. He seemed more upset by laying on the table before they even did the test. They used a thing with multiple little cups containing allergens and we waited to watch for any of the marks to react. He has mild allergies. If they were worse we would have noticed it at home.
  • Oh, he was almost 3 when he was tested.
