Anyone else have experience with this?

Hey guys! So I had chronic Asthma before getting pregnant and it hasn't gotten any better since becoming pregnant. I have a pretty rough night with it last night and ended up in the er overnight. I spoke to my ob and my pulmonary dr today and they just keep telling me that my breathing is the most important thing. Anyway, they wrote me a prescription for prednisone but I am nervous to take it. When I asked about the side effects on the baby they would not give me an answer. Does anyone else have experience with taking prednisone during pregnancy or with chronic asthma? Just feeling a little helpless over here. Thanks in advance.

  • I have zero experience with what you are talking about, but I just wanted to wish you the best and suggest that your Doctors clearly think you should take the medication, and they would not prescribe it if the risks out weighed the benefits. If you are super worried it is always okay to seek a second opinion when it comes to you and your baby's health care.

    Good luck!

  • I was on prednisone for most of my last pregnancy.  At 8 mths pregnant I was hospitalized for a week due to uncontrolled asthma.  During that time I received prednisone through an IV at high doses.  I was kept on the maternity floor so they could monitor the baby.  She was fine the whole time and still is almost two years later.  I have to say I hated it but my pulmonologist said the same thing many times.  My breathing was most important.  One thing you should know is that it most likely effected my glucose test results.  They could never determine if I failed because I actually had GD or because of the prednisone.

This pregnancy I will have my glucose test early (16 weeks).  I'm not on prednisone yet but my asthma kicked in even earlier this time.  It sucks.  I'm on meds but they're not working.  I wish us both happy and healthy lungs!
  • Yikes, I hope that whatever you decide to do, much relief comes your way and soon!

I took prednisone once before when I had a bad allergy reaction to another medication. I don't remember too much about side effects, but I do remember that when you go off it, you have to wean or the side effects would be worse. I also like the suggestion of contacting the pharmacist as well. In my experience, they're pretty open and honest about information regarding any medication.

  • I agree with the PP. It's more important for you and the baby to have enough oxygen.
I have chronic asthma too but I spoke with my asthma specialist and I switch from adviar to symbacort once I got a BFP. I know it would be a bad situation for me and my baby if I tried to go without any medication.
My mom, who is a neonatal nurse, said they give the babies symbacort, so that made me feel better about taking the steroids.

  • Thanks everyone! I spoke with my actually ob doc last night (not a nurse) and she reassured me that everything would be fine. I'm only on it for 5 days but it's still nerve racking.

I was also on Advair before getting pregnant. My pulmonologist put me on serevent and pulmicourt which I guess are both safe during pregnancy. They told me to try to limit the use of my rescue inhaler. I was able to make it through first tri without using it once. As soon as I hit second tri I had to use it a couple times on account of waiting for refills for my preventative inhalers. Idk what happened the other night that caused me to have such a bad asthma attack but it sure was scary. I think I'm just gonna follow docs orders cause after all they have to know what they are talking about right?

  • britb143 good luck! Let us know what you decide to do. Prednisone was always the only thing that seemed to calm my asthma down if it gets bad but I haven't had to take it during pregnancy. I am sure the dr. outweighed the side effects verse the benefit or they wouldn't have prescribed it to you. Like PP said it doesn't hurt to double check with the pharmacist. Hope you feel better soon.
