The Pencil Test

Ok, I know some of you will strongly disagree with this, totally fine. When I was pregnant with my first, my mom wanted to do this "pencil test" to determine the sex of the baby. I totally thought it was a waste of time. She done it, it said I would have 4 kids, 2 girls & 2 boys. It said my first would be a girl, well my first was a boy. Today my grandma wanted to do it, I told her I didn't want to because when mom had done it, it was wrong. Well my mom apparently didn't do it right (yes, according to my grandma you can do it wrong) so she sits me at the table with a threaded needle in a pencil on my LEFT (this was important) wrist. It starts off going in circles, then it starts swinging left to right (I believe, I've already forgot lol) showing a son (my oldest) then it goes back to circles and then goes back to swinging left to right showing another son (my youngest) then back to circles then it started going up and down showing a girl (OMG, I hope) then maybe one circle and it started swinging left to right again (my grandma said this meant I would get pregnant very soon after having this baby) Then it stopped. I have to admit, I was pretty impressed. Just the fact that it's a pencil, she wasn't swinging it, she was perfectly still and in between each up and down or left and right it done the circles just as she said. Then she done my mom (for fun) and it showed circles, up and down (me), lots of circles (9 years between me & my sister) and then up and down again (my sister) then it stopped. I'm totally amazed by this. My grandma swears everyone she has ever done this on, it has been right. It's also said to show miscarriages and abortions. Has anyone else ever done this? Obviously, I'm not going around saying I'm having a girl. I'll wait til that ultrasound comes along but I'll be even more impressed if it's right! Flame Away!! haha.

  • My MIL tried some crap like this with a needle when I was pregnant with DD.  But she didn't know what it meant when the needle went side to side so there is that...

  • Ok, so my mom's friend did this exact thing to my mom years ago. I'm the oldest of 4. 2girls and then 2 boys, but at the time, my youngest brother wasn't even thought of yet. Lol. So, she hold the pencil up above my mom's wrist and it showed girl, girl, boy...(waited a few minutes) ...and then another boy. My mom thought she was full of shit bc she was done having kids. Well, SURPRISE! Along came another boy.
So, yes.... I know what test you're talking about and it worked (and was 100% correct) for my mom. :-)

I have to admit that reading this post reminded me a bit of Rafikki (not sure I spelled that right) from The Lion King reading his coconut/leaf/wind-dust mixture and discovering that Simba was alive. ;)

My aunts used to have a contest to see who could hold more pencils under their ginormous titties. The result of that test you ask? Theresa. And now you know.

Haha sorry, I was kinda in a hurry when I typed it.

It is a divination technique. Basically you create a pendulum, it can be anything on a string. You establish rules for what the movements mean and you use it to tap into your intuition or communicate with Spirit. PS when I read pencil test I thought you meant the one that tells you if your boobs are sagging. I failed the pencil test at 14, but I have bigguns.
I had never heard of this before lol. I would definitely fail that test :/

My husband's family does this and has for years and years. It literally has been correct EVERY...SINGLE...TIME, with all children in the family. It is very freaky.

They did it on me when I was pregnant with DS and normally you aren't supposed to do it on someone that is pregnant because it skews the results (if that's even possible, who knows). But we did it at a family reunion with everyone gathered around and it said I would have 2 kids: a boy, then a girl. So far it's 50% right.

I know, it sounds crazy but the family totally believes in it and it's been right for like 3 generations of kids. It's a "tradition" for their family.

My step grandma swears by this method too!! I was kind of making fun of all the wives tales the other day and she was very adamant that this one is 100%!! I let her do it to me and it said I'll have 5 kids, 3 boys, 2 girls and this first one is a boy. She was so pleased with herself. I don't think I'll be able to break the news that there's a 50/50 chance of the "test" being right if this first one is a boy haha

It's all mumbo jumbo.  Do the test if you think it's fun, but definitely don't bank on the results.

A great-aunt of ours did this test on a cousin and I many, many years back (this was before we were even married).  My cousin was told she'd have 3 girls  I was told I'd have 3 boys.

I have one almost 7 year old DS.  With all my fertility/rpl issues, it's not likely we'll have 3 of anything.

As for my cousin... dead wrong... she has 3 but they are all boys!

  • It's actually not for fortune telling, so that is one major reason for inaccuracy. You are basically accessing your subconscious mind to answer the question, so really it's a guess even if you don't believe in divination as an art. So the probability of being correct is still 50/50.
