education- applying for 2 jobs, same district?

I've been teaching in an urban middle school for 7 years and really need a change.  While there I've obtained a reading specialist and supervisor's certificate, just so I have options, but not necessarily interested in using them right now.  A local suburban district has an opening for a middle school teacher and a supervisor.  I'd like to apply for the teaching position, but I'm concerned they may prefer to higher a newer teacher that they wouldn't have to pay as well.  I'm interested in the supervisor's position as well,  but I worry that I don't have enough experience and I don't want to work 12 months or until 5 at night right now while my kids are so young.  I am a mentor for a new teacher, so that's about the extent of my experience working with teachers in a role of support.
Would it look ok if a apply for both jobs?  I don't want them to think I'm applying for the teaching one as an after thought or 2nd choice.

  • I would apply for both. It will look fine, especially if both jobs are more desirable than your current job.

Unless you've spoken to someone in charge of hiring, you cannot be sure that they want a less experiences/less expensive teacher.  You may be a great fit for the supervisor role as well.

Prior to teaching, I was in finance. I was turned down for a few jobs I was certainly qualified to do.  I figured I wasn't a good fit for some reason or I had a bad interview or two.  I was also offered, took, and successfully did two jobs I was not qualified for on paper.  (I was offered a third like this, but turned it down to go to school to become a teacher.)

It sounds a little cheesy, but the first person you need to convince that you're qualified for and will successfully do either job is yourself.

    Good luck!

  • Yes, apply for both. Also, I don't think 7 years makes you too 'old.' I got hired for my current reading specialist position with 7 years experience. I think they'd prefer someone not brand new.

  • I would apply to both.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • New teachers are cheap but they require SO much work. I think 7 years of experience is just right. You aren't a new teacher but you aren't to experienced and set in your ways. My admins like to hire someone with 5 to 8 years experience. I would definitely apply to both.
