Baby clothes for hospital

This feels like a dumb question, but I'm a FTM due in early May and am struggling to figure out what attire to bring for baby to wear home. We are in the northeast, so let's assume it might be anywhere from 50-70 degrees at that point. Long sleeved? Short sleeved? I want to go buy stuff, but I'm really stuck on what's temperature appropriate for a newborn. Thoughts?

  • I'm in northeast also-- on my 3rd kid and I can tell you that with our 1st, she was asleep when we were being discharged so she was in the hospital outfit with a hat and blanket over her- not the "adorable going-home" outfit I anticipated! But we went from the hospital, to the car, and into the house- basic pjs (with feet) and a hat plus a blanket if it's cooler over them would be perfect!

we're bringing an outfit that is basically like a sleep n play, long sleeve with covered feet. if it's cooler out, we'll probably just cover him with a blanket and make sure he has a hat on.
This is similar to what I am doing. I live in Massachusetts and I wear sweaters up until June.

  • I'm in NJ and we are putting him in pants, long sleeve shirt, hat and socks matching outfit. It's all in a light material, but still warm. You could get a light sleeper, too.
  • I am also a ftm in Michigan which will probably have the same temperature. I am waiting to see if I get any clothes at my shower but I'm thinking I'll bring maybe 2 newborn and 2 0-3 month sleepers just to be prepared in case she is big lol I don't anticipate on using all of them but I want to be prepared in case she spits up, poops or pees out of her diaper, etc. For going home she will be in long sleeves. If its chilly I'll just cover her with a blanket. I just want her to be comfortable :)
  • I have a long sleeve white onesie (with mitten cuffs) a hat and a blanket.  Although it likely will not be cold.

  • In MD so similar weather. A 0-3m zippered sleeper and a hat. Will have light blanket too.

DD barely fit into the cute NB set I had for her and then threw up all over it and me as soon as we got home :-)

  • I'm in GA, and we will likely deliver in warm weather. That being said, I plan to bring long-sleeved/pants/socks/hat/etc/ everything for LO since they are unable to regulate their body temp.

Plan to bring mostly warm things, and maybe a cooler outfit just in case.
  • I'm in MA, so I feel your pain!  It was much easier for DD who was born in December.

I have a little set that includes pants with feet, a short sleeved onesie, and a cardigan/hoodie thing - so she can wear the hoodie or not.

  • You could bring two outfits. One for warmer weather and one for colder weather. Decide which one when the day comes. Or you could choose an outfit with layers that you can either add or take away depending on the temperatures.
  • Ditto the PP who lives in GA - we are also in GA and the outfit I have planned for LO to come home in is kind of like a layette set, long-sleeved cotton sleeper with socks and a hat. Just in case.

  • We will do long sleeves, and long pants.  Probably a one piece.  I don't want to put pants or anything with an elastic that could bother her umbilical cord.

We brought DD1 home in August in MA, and still had long sleeves/pants.  At 2-5 days old they haven't really learned to regulate their body temperature yet.

  • We going with a sleepsuit, hat and cardigan set. It's going to be fairly cool here when she's born, so we want to make sure she's covered up. We only live 10 mins away from the hospital, so can always change her when we get home.

For when we're in the hospital, I'm just taking some onesies in different sizes, along with scratch mitts and socks. I plan to swaddle her to begin with, so she won't need full outfits.

  • I had planned on bringing footie pajamas, and am adding a blanket to that because that's an excellent idea, in case we get another freak May snowstorm.  If it's warm, we'll just leave him in the hospital shirt.
  • We're mid-Atlantic and when DD was born in early June, we brought her home in a long-sleeve onesie, long pants, and socks. She was perfectly comfy.

Just remember they don't regulate body heat as well as we do, so the general rule of thumb is to think about what you'd be comfortable in, and add one layer. Also, when you make the trek home, assuming it's not going to be an all day trip, you'll probably be back inside pretty quickly, so your LO won't be exposed to the elements for that long.

  • I'm in PA and we will be brining him home from the hospital in a onsie and pants with a matching cardigan if needed and socks. My pediatrician advised that he needs no more clothes than I'd be comfortable in. In late kay when I'm due it could be 50-70 as well so I assumed a light cotton material was fine. I'll have a blanket in case but didn't feel like a hat or jacket was nessicary. I guess it's all relative to that particular day..
  • I'm in MA, will be putting LO in cotton footed pajamas and a cotton had. DD was born in November and came home in fleece footed pajamas and fleece hat. Will also bring a couple blankets if it's cool. I refuse to put a newborn in any outfit that has more than one piece, absolutely no pants or socks for this LO, they're way too annoying in the begining. Also remember you strap baby in the carseat in your hospital room, go straight to the car then home. They don't really spend much time outside.

  • I agree with PP's - bring layers!

  • Thanks, guys! After this weekends shower, I will start shopping!
  • We live in NY and are planning on bringing DD home in cotton pants, onsie, hat and blanket, we did the same for DS (minus the hat, because it was July) and it worked well.

This exactly, except my daughter was born in November : ) I'm pretty sure we had one of those JJcole buntings for her. My first son had the same style outfit in July. This little guy will likely have his minky (sp?) blanket .... Spring is never coming to MA : p
