SS... worried about preeclampsia

I didn't have any signs of preeclampsia in my first pregnancy, including swelling. In the last week, I've had swelling in hands and feet, right shoulder pain (referred pain, maybe? It feels like a collar bone pain around where my bra strap sits), and smelly pee, and visual disturbances (spots in my vision). These symptoms come and go, and are usually in the evening. DH thinks I'm overreacting, but of course I've googled and I'm convinced. Should I call my doctor or wait another week and a half and bring it up at my next appointment? Has anyone else had these symptoms?

Edit: I'm "lhalliburton", but I had to create a new account because my log in info wouldn't work.

  • Swelling is starting about now, so that's fairly common. Start monitoring your blood pressure. Call your doc to make you feel better. if you can give doc your BP number over a couple of days it might be helpful.

  • Agree with PP. However if it makes you feel better just call. I've had severe pre eclampsia and eclampsia. Unfortunately I already have a little bit of protein in my urine and my blood pressure is elevated even with medication. I'm already showing signs. However my headaches and vision changes don't leave so I think maybe you have dehydration and maybe cut back on sodium? And def monitor BP.
  • Thank you so much for your input. It makes me feel better to know that it's not an emergency, and it can wait until my doctor's appointment. I've been drinking more water over the past couple of days and it hasn't changed much accept for the frequency of bathroom trips  :)  thank you for the suggestions! I will monitor my bp.
  • As PP mentioned, I'd check with your doctor and monitor your blood pressure. I'd also make sure it isn't a UTI. I've never had any pain associated with UTIs, however with my soon I had them several times, only to be discovered with the routine urine sample at the doctor.

  • With my BP monitoring, they have told me to call in for headaches that don't go away with Tylenol, water and rest, visual disturbances and upper abdominal pain. No shoulder pain was mentioned. For about $50 you can pick up a home BP monitor. If you are worried, pick one up and see where you are.

and call in if you are concerned. That's what they are there for :-)
  • As others have said, call the doctor if you're concerned, but don't borrow trouble.  The shoulder pain could be gas, too (weird, but it's true, had it when I was in recovery from my c-section).
  • Same here...I had it last pregnancy, so I ordered a BP monitor to do regular checks at home. I'm just trying to keep an eye on my symptoms and let my dr know if anything changes. It's not fun!

  • High Blood pressure is a preexisting condition for me so my MW is super worried about me getting Preeclampsia especially since I gained 7 lbs last month and really don't need to gain any weight because I started out so heavy in the beginning.  I was told to cut out as much sodium as possible and to watch how many carbs I consume.  I would say if you feel you should call the doctor then definitely do it, that is what they are there for.  I lost my last baby at 16 weeks due to my BP and issues relating to it.  That being said I have never had shoulder pain though when my BP is super high I have a pain that shoots down the left side of my neck that is usually combined with a headache.

  • I have also started swelling this week. And, I had pre-eclampsia with my son. So, it is really scary. I was wondering the same thing, so thank you for posting this. I am convinced that I will get it again even though, I think the stats on the liklihood of a repeat aren't that high?

  • I had pre-eclampsia with my pregnancy 11 years ago... and was informed this raises the risks for having it this pregnancy (along with a "long inter-pregnancy interval").

That being said, the urine smell and shoulder pain are *not* symptoms I was told to watch out for.  Swelling, BP, liver pain (near the ribs), visual disturbances and headaches were on the list of what to look for.
  • I went to the hospital last time (and subsequently admitted and induced) because everything looked a little more "gray" and hazy... is the best way I could describe it.  It was just off.

If you're worried, most ob/gyns have 24 hour call lines to check with a nurse to see whether you should be going in or not.

Can y'all describe what you mean by visual disturbances? I've had blurry vision in my right eye all day, but I just thought I was crazy.

I keep getting different answers when I ask this question. I ask because I developed a giant floater 8-10 mos ago. I want to know what I will be seeing that is different from what I currently see.

I have been told black spots, more solid than a floater and I have been told auras around the field of vision. If you have had migraines, you probably know what those look like. If not, it reminds me of the rainbow-ish circles i see around lights after night time pool (ie chlorine) swimming.
