July 2014 Moms

Baby clothes and all around freak out!

Oh ladies I feel so lost.  This may be my 3rd kiddo but my youngest is 10 years old.  I feel like a FTM again.  There are so many new things to worry about purchasing or not purchasing and I am at a loss there but my main freak out today is clothes for my LO.  My last two kids were fall and winter babies so I was just able to buy them the warmest things I could find but with a baby due July 3rd I am so worried about what I should actually buy.

Did you guys still buy the footy pjs?

Or should I stick to onesies? I know babies get cold easy but summers here get pretty warm usually not under 80 or 90 at the lowest.

But if I end up with Preeclampsia like my doctor expects me to with my previous HBP condition I could end up having LO sooner than that.  I would just buy a little bit of everything but I am severely broke and have been unable to work enough to even make my bills this month.  I feel like I am digging a whole I may not be able to dig out of.  I'm starting to feel like I am up a creek without a paddle.

Words of encouragement and advice would be greatly appreciated.  Sorry about the length I started out just freaking out about clothes then it just all came crashing down!

  • I think the rule is to dress babies 1 layer warmer than you wear. I wear tank tops and shorts all summer so I would probably keep a baby in long sleeve onesies (sleep and play things) quite a bit.

  • DS was a July baby. I am in Northern Virginia; summers are hot and humid. We have A/C but don't blast it, probably have it set to 78-80. He wore mostly short sleeve snap tees during the day the first two weeks; sleepsack for sleep (easier to me for diaper changes than footies), and blanket for naps. After the stump came off we moved to short sleeve onesies around the house instead and sometimes outfits but not heavy clothes. That is to give you an idea; plenty of people keep their homes much colder than we do so obviously that would require adjusting accordingly.

  • @mhooks23, I just had a breakdown about finances. I understand being completely broke. My SO made me come lay down and breathe and told me funny stories. PM me if you want to talk more!
Its very hot & humid in the summer where I live (Oklahoma) & we will have air conditioning (typically kept about 65-both SO & I are very hot natured) so I plan on buying warmer sleepers, including some footie ones.
In regards to finances, since we just had to spend what we had saved up for baby girl's clothing & other necessities- I plan on hitting a lot of garage sales. Also having a garage sale of my own to earn some bill/baby money if I can get my mom or friends to help. Maybe thats something that would help you too? I'm not sure where you live- how common yard/garage sales are in your area.
Anyway OP I'm sorry you're having a hard time! I don't post on here a ton, but read pretty frequently, so feel free to message me if you need anyone to talk to or vent on!
  • We used the regular cotton sleep sacks in summer and switched to fleece for winter. We actually ended up getting a space heater for his room for winter too since, even now at 3.5, he just won't keep under a blanket while sleeping; that is just him though, plenty of kids keep a blanket on. We might have done long sleeve onesies under the sleep sacks at bed, I do not remember. I now know he runs slightly warm so there is that, but it is a good starting place at least.

  • DS was born in June. It is somewhat hot here (90s) and we keep our thermostat around 70-71. During the days we were at home, I kept him in lightweight long sleeves (such as sleepers or pants/onesies and socks). When we went out, I would usually dress him in short sleeves or a shorts romper. I just kept a lightweight blanket with me at all times. I would cover him up in the car or when we went indoors. He had several dr's appointments since he was a preemie, so we mainly went the short sleeve onesie and blanket route.

I would say you need a little bit of both, but you could always start with onesies and wrap LO in a blanket when indoors to help cut costs on buying the variety. I will say that the 3 piece sets from Carter's were my favorite because they would come with pants, a short sleeve onesie, and a long sleeve onesie. It was nice to have the option of what to put him in depending on the day we had planned.

  • My July 2011 baby was in onesies (sometimes with pants) during the day and cotton and terrycloth footed sleepers at night, or gowns. I keep my house between 68-72 year round.

DS was born in July '11 and that summer we were in the upper 80s and 90s. No a/c and my house at the time was badly insulated so it was always hot. DS was usually just in a diaper or just a onesie by a month old, especially when he napped. When he first got home (and at night) he wore sleep n plays and gowns. If we went out he had rompers, onesies/pants or onesies/shorts... He didn't like being swaddled or super warm so it's going to depend in your LO and what they seem comfy in. Oh and I swear by muslin blankets. Great to keep the chill off but not too hot either.

I had DS in August 2012. It was 80s and 90s. We kept the house around 70-72. In the house we used thin cotton sleep gowns and swaddled him in a think blanket. When we went out he was usually in short sleeves and pants. If he got too hot I could undress him but its harder to warm them up if they're cold.

  • We keep our house on the cooler side (67-68), so I'll probably go with footed sleepers in the house. I usually wear shorts and a long sleeved shirt. Outside, if its really hot probably short sleeved onsies or rompers.

  • Super helpful thread! I was intending on doing short sleeve onesies and socks but after reading I think I'll do a few more sleepers and some of those Carter's three piece sets as well, as well as plenty of the Aden and Anai's thin cotton blankets.

Feel ya' on being broke. Don't think I've had a meltdown yet but tears on several occasion super close to a meltdown. ((Hugs))

Pretty much ditto this, except I had a 2009 summer baby.
  • Do you have air conditioning?

Yes we do have air conditioning in the house nut we tend to keep it around 78-80 degrees in the house. Thank you so much ladies I'm just super stressed because I am down to my 100 days and we still have yet to purchase anything for our LO and even tell our families and kids. It is great to have you guys to talk to about this since we haven't told anyone else.

  • Take a breath and lay down for a few minutes. Remember babies really don't need that much. The most important thing you can give your baby right now is your health. If you are stressed baby is stressed. Every thing will work out. I promise. You are going to be a great mom.
