Massage?

I'm 13 weeks and wondering if I need to book a prenatal massage or just let the masseuse know that I'm pregnant?

Re: Massage?

  • I believe this early you can just let the masseuse know. I was pretty late in my pregnancy with DD for my massage, and she just made sure she didn't hit any trigger points and would not do deep tissue.

  • I'm 16 weeks but I went for a prenatal massage at 15w 3d. I asked my OB before I went. She said it was fine. Many massage therapists won't do one during the first trimester so find out if they will let you have one at 13 weeks, they probably have a specific cut off policy.
  • My husband booked a massage for me @10 wks and didn't tell them I was pregnant. When I got there and told the masseuse I was 10 wks she said she couldn't do a massage on me bc I was in my first trimester. You should be fine at 13 wks but it wouldn't hurt to tell them ahead of time.
  • I'd let them know ahead. That's how I handled it, which also gave my massage therapist some time to brush up on the safe techniques for prenatal massage and she even had a special pillow ready for me in case I was uncomfortable laying on my stomach already.
  • Thanks, ladies
  • I'm going in for a prenatal massage this Friday and I'll be 15 weeks 5 days pregnant. Just out of curiosity, why won't they do one in your first trimester?

From what I've been told there's no risk in the actual massage but because the risk of miscarriage is so high in the first trimester the spas/masseuses don't want to be blamed for it in case there is a miscarriage by chance.

  • Just let them know. I went a few weeks ago and they had me on my side with a body pillow. It was wonderful. Enjoy.

  • I'm going to be seeing someone trained in Prenatal massage. Definitely let them know you are pregnant and finding someone trained would be best in my opinion. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I would call them beforehand to make sure you get someone trained in prenatal massages since, at least at the place I go, not everyone does them.

  • in second trimester and have my first massage scheduled next week but it's not a 'prenatal'. I don't really want to tell them i'm pregnant because my gf said the 'prenatal' are very lame massages....What are the dangers of a massage in the first place? I'm still not really showing and my uterus hasn't popped over the pelvic bone so I can still lie on my stomach comfortably. I will more than likely end up telling them just don't want a massage that is like a limp handshake!

  • As PP have said said make an appointment with a therapist trained in prenatal massage. I had a 90 min a couple weeks ago and it was heaven!

Prenatal massages are definitely not lame but they're different.  You lay on your side rather than tummy (after 1st tri) and they use whatever pressure you prefer.  I'm sure if you told them you wanted firm pressure they would be happy to do it.  I'm not sure of any dangers of lying on your tummy after first trimester but I know that with prenatal massages there are certain pressure points on your body that they avoid.
