Birth control patch for AF regulation? AF mentioned plus one sex act, but not that one.

Does anyone have experience with this? Love it, hate it, side effects?

I know people react different ways but I had never even heard of the patch while living under my rock.

This option was suggested by my doctor after I told her AF post baby had regulated but lasted 9+ days. It's not heavy just annoying and seriously interferes with my scissoring. ;) But I am reluctant to mess with my hormones again when I can only see 2 benefits (fewer flow days/ no more condoms).

PS. I was on Yaz before with no problems and we are 85% sure we are one and done but still want the flexibility to pull the goalie if ever the ute gets ideas.

  • I have no experience with the patch, but a few of my gfs have used it and I believe they said it tends to cause some weight gain, skin irritation, and/or some other nasty side effects (I realize you kind of run this risk with any hormonal bc though).

Would you be open to the nuvaring? I used it for years before stopping toget pg with ds, and I loved it. No issues and I had light, short periods. Plus like a patch, its low maintenance and not permanent. Just an idea.

  • I cant say the same for when I used nuvaring again after DS though. Apparently my body chemistry changed and hormonal bc and I dont mesh that well any more. But thats just my personal experience.

  • The nuvaring insertion freaks me out honestly. I imagine myself in the bathroom forever trying to get it right. Crying and swearing. At least that was my initial experience with contact lenses and tampons.

Like all BC discussions, get ready for some anecdotes because everyone is different...but all my friends who did the patch hated it because it made them crazy.

Why the patch specifically? Pretty much all hormonal birth control will regulate your cycle. That's why I went on a BCP in the first place.

The patch is a weekly application instead of daily. Fix it and forget it kind of thing. Sounded easy.

I fully expect anecdotes and find them useful to manage expectations. I have none regarding the patch.

  • Irena was going to be my other suggestion. Ive never used it personally, but I know lots of people who have and they loved it. Pretty much everyone I know said they had nearly non existent periods. Plus its good for up to 5 years, so if you're thinking youre OAD, its a semi long term solution.

  • GD It...I cant edit. I meant Mirena.

  • IUDs feel too "permanent" commitment-wise for me right now. Even tho there are non hormonal types. I'm saving that for my 40s, which is approaching fast.

Depo shot might be an option.

I know it's all a crapshoot. It was getting on Yaz too and little did I know that could have ended badly. I appreciate the feedback ladies.

  • I used the patch in college and the area around the patch gets gunky because of the stickiness. I would have a sticky residue that would outline the patch.

    Very sexy.

  • I'm on the depo shot right now. I got it a month after having my dd. I stopped my pp bleeding about the same time I got it and started again a week later. I've been bleeding for about three months now. If you get it again it's not supposed to make you bleed that long again but I'm not getting it again. I'm looking into different options.
  • I used it when it first came out in the early 2000s. It irritated my skin and had the residue issue, but I didn't have any other side effects. The edges would start to lift off towards the end of the week which made me nervous. Maybe it's different now. I didn't get KU on it so that's a plus.

  • Omg I hate sticky residue. That never would have occurred to me! I can picture DH playing with the peeling corners to mess with me.

I think I've decided the patch is not for me.

  • I almost went on the patch. I got over my fear of them after they got all that heat back in 2005 from killing a few women. I was told by my doc that it isn't a good option for "fluffy" women. It has a pretty large margin of failure for women over 180lbs from what she told me. I ended up going on my trusty pill after hearing that.

Depo made me gain 50lbs in an insanely quick amount of time. We're talking less than 3-6 months (or 1-2 shots). I stopped after shot #3 and I thank the lords I did. I did not have a period for that time either (pretty common on depo).

Nuvaring is an option. I've tried and didn't hate it. I just found it awkward. So I stopped using it.

  • Man I feel like such a newb at this. I went to the appt fine with no BC in my life and she says "patch" and I'm like a deer in headlights. A virgin deer.

And now I'm kinda questioning my OAD stance.
