Solids schedule

What does everyone's feeding schedule look like?

The paper from the ped made me stress about doing it all wrong! It said he needs two servings of iron fortified cereal plus servings of fruits and veggies each day. I know you have to work up to it introducing one new food every 4 days but at this point I'm so confused about how to work up to that!

Re: Solids schedule

  • Alexis gets a veggie in the afternoon, and a fruit mixed with cereal at night. She also gets five or six formula bottles a day.

  • We just got on a sort of schedule in the past week or so but i wouldn't worry if you're not on one. Our pediatrician also recommended doing a new food for 3 days vs. 4. Truth be told sometimes i do 2 days. Neither my husband or I have allergies and the foods I'm introducing are low allergen-producing ones.

Anyways, so we usually do an 8oz bottle around 8-9, oatmeal (1.5 -2 oz), around 10.30-11, 8oz bottle round 12, a veggie or fruit at 2ish, an 8oz bottle around 4, fruit or veggie (less than 3 oz) round 6 and final  8oz bottle round 8.30-9. My goal is to get 32 oz and breakfast, lunch and dinner. We are now on day 5 of doing that and so far it's working although she sometimes leaves an oz or so in her bottle. I make my own veggies but have been buying the organic fruit pouches to introduce apple, pear, mango and today prunes.
  • Your handout sounds like a lot, especially for just starting out. We started about 3 weeks ago and she usually gets a fruit or veggie once a day (sweet fruits are almost always mixed with a veggie). Usually I give it to her early afternoon, and only about a tablespoon per sitting. Sometimes I'll do a little oatmeal with BM in the morning, maybe a couple times a week. There are days when she doesn't have any solids, mostly because I keep forgetting to send some in her bag on the days I work. She has had avocado, sweet potato, banana, and apple. We're starting peas or mango next (haven't decided).

  • In the mornings she gets a fruit and oatmeal and a veggie and maybe some rice cereal at night. We BF and FF right now but there's no regulation with that
  • Lo loves solids. He's worked his way up to 2oz of fruit and 2oz of oatmeal for breakfast and 2oz of vegetables and 2oz of rice cereal at dinner. He gets a few puffs at lunch and we will be starting yogurt for lunch next week. He dropped down to 4 bottles but the pedi said not to worry unless he stops gaining.
  • We aren't following a schedule. On average I would say he gets solids in the afternoon. Each new solid i give him for 4 days in a row. I'm done with oatmeal for awhile. LO has had violent vomiting episodes a couple hours after having oatmeal the last 2 times I've given him some. (One night was 7 times in 6 hours). Last night being one of those nights. I'm currently waiting on a call back from his doctor to get her opinion on it.

  • People stress way too much about solids. The goal is a fed baby. At this age, most of LOs nutrition needs to be BM or formula. You can also start adding in solids. But you don't need a schedule.

Is tonight really busy? Have lots of errands to run? Skip solids.
Is tomorrow more relaxed? Feed solids 3 times if you want.

FWIW, we BLW. At this point, S. asks for solids pretty much every time we eat. He fusses until he is in his high chair with food too. So he gets offered solids pretty much 3x a day. (I am a SAHM.)  For breakfast he gets toast or apple slices.

Lunch is usually a fruit with cheese sometimes. Dinner is whatever we are having.

I wish our society didn't make people stress over this.

  • I think I got a similar hand out because I am super stressed about this too. Thanks for asking @blondii428‌. It's nice to not be alone in this.
  • Were still focusing mainly on breastmilk.  He gets a solid maybe once a day, it's usually a veggie.
  • @barnwife how old is your baby? I saw you're feeding him toast and fruit and cheese. Does you LO have teeth?
  • @staebells
    S. is 6.5 months (he's as early Sept. baby) and has no teeth. Babies can enjoy eating many foods even without teeth. As we don't have history of food allergies or sensitivities in our families, the only food we avoid is honey. He's even had PB.

I am not kidding when I say I give him food from my plate. I just make sure it's in an appropriate size. If it's too small for him to handle (doesn't have a lot of finger dexterity) I use a mesh feeder.

Really, at this point we are introducing our kiddos to different sizes and textures and tastes. It's not about them getting nutrition from the solids. That needs to come from BM or formula.

  • Our schedule is fruit and oatmeal in the morning (4 oz), Lunch 4 oz of veggie / fruit pouch and 4 oz of veggie / fruit for dinner. I offer solids before giving him the bottles at meal times. I do a combination of homemade baby food and organic food pouches. My LO loves to eat :)

  • I offer whatever our 'new food' is to DS at dinner. He will usually only eat a few bites which is fine I'm just looking for food sensitivities. He eats a little of an established food at lunch at dcp.
