I've been MIA, but have a question...

Hey ladies,

I've been MIA for a WHILE!  My apologies...

Anyway, I've been experiencing some strange symptoms for the last week and I wanted to see if anyone else is having any of these.  I was monitored in the ER yesterday--baby is fine.  These particular symptoms keep getting worse.  My husband wants me to call the doctor back again today, but I don't want to seem like THAT patient.

1. Severe headache with pain starting in my right shoulder.  Lasted from last Saturday night to Wednesday of last week.  Tylenol did not help.
2. Shortness of breath.
3. Very hard heartbeat...very noticeable.  You can see my chest pumping.  Feels very strange.
4. Sparks/flashes of light in my eyes--sounds strange, but it's hard to describe.  Usually happens along with the strange heartbeat and shortness of breath.
5. Nail beds turning purple.
6. Severe lower back pain--I know this is very common.

  • In the ER yesterday, they said my BP was fine.  She didn't give me the numbers.

  • DRUMM!!!

I had been asking about you forever and couldn't get in touch with you. You had me worried!

  • I think you definitely need to call your doc and see them ASAP. All those things combined do not seem like "normal" symptoms.

The on call doctor at my practice sent me to the ER yesterday, so I guess they're aware?  I don't know.  I don't feel more anxious than normal...then again I am a teacher AND a mom with a toddler.  I try to rest as much as I can, but my husband works out of town a lot.

I know, I'm sorry!  Work got really busy, then we bought a house and moved right before Christmas.  It's been hectic!

  • That sounds like BP stuff, did you feel like that while in the er? Did they measure your urine protein? I thought I saw a bunch of those on a list of Pre-Eclampsia sites, but I could be wrong. don't worry about being "that" patient. Don't mess around with baby stuff- you get 9 months to be crazy over every little thing, and it's OK:), because sometime it IS something.

You bring up a good point.  The only symptom I had when I went to the ER was the purple nail beds.  The others have been coming and going for a week.  They didn't check for protein in my urine yesterday either, which I thought was strange.

  • I would call your OB.  Have you been drinking enough water?  I know dehydration can really play a big part.  But that whole list together doesn't sound quite right.  Call.  It's just not the baby's health, but yours too!  They won't mind.  Keep us updated!

  • Def call!!! You are not any type of patient-- you are a loving mom checking on symptoms. Let us know! Thinking of you!
  • I have the shortness of breath, lower back pain, and heart pumping loud/hard symptoms, and my BP is fine and my dr isn't concerned. But, all of those symptoms together is a bit worrisome. I'd call again to be certain.

  • I would call. It sounds like high BP to me. It doesn't have to be high all the time to sky rocket. They need to be monitoring it better.

  • Sounds like you have many symptoms of preeclampsia. I was just reading about it today and remember the specific symptom of pain in the right shoulder and many of the things you listed. Definitely call!

@baby+drumm - how are you feeling today?
  • Thanks for asking!  My nails have a little purple tint--nothing too major.  Headache continues today.  Everything else feels normal as of right now.

I ended up not calling the doctor yesterday because I started to feel a bit better yesterday afternoon.  I have to call the doctor this afternoon to set up my FMLA paperwork for maternity leave, so I think I'm going to mention it then just to make sure my doctor is aware.

  • Update!

I called the nurse and spoke with her.  She said the headaches concern her the most.  Sounds like I need to check my BP when I have one.

I have one today and checked my BP--it's at 107/68, so I guess that's good.  I still feel silly for called about every little thing!  She's going to speak to my doctor and call me back to see if they want to see me sooner that April 4th.

    Thanks for the advice!

There's nothing silly about calling to me. My thought is that you pay your OB/Midwife a pretty penny for excellent care, so if you have somethings concerning you (especially your symptoms!), call them.

I've felt like something was wrong with me for a few weeks now, but I just chalked it up to the normal pregnancy woes. Fast forward to a scheduled blood test, and come to find out I'm anemic. I wish I would've talked to my doctor about it from the beginning, rather than feeling so crummy and letting it be discovered through normal testing.

***** Yep. Do not feel silly. You've already been through this before, so if your instincts tell you things aren't right...make the call! And don't think that
because you've been through this before you should be able to handle things better/differently. Better safe than sorry right :)
