Batteries and letdown

Hi ladies, I'm new to this board and have been reading through lots of previously posted info so I know you're all smart on this topic! I'm an A14 so quickly needing to order a pump but was looking for advice!

1. How important is a battery pack? Does it really get used a lot or is a car adapter sufficient? My Medela options has a built in battery but the Hygeia option is an external.

2. What's the thought on the letdown button? Necessary or convenience? Can I accomplish the same by changing the speed and suction settings on one (Hygeia) without the button?

Thanks so much!

Re: Batteries and letdown

  • I think it's actually better to be able to control the speed and suction settings independently vs. having a "letdown" button that assumes all women need the same speed/suction to trigger letdown.  So I'd vote Hygeia for sure (I dislike Medela for a number of other reasons including that it's an open system and the fact they refuse to follow the WHO code).

On the battery pack, I think it depends on where you might be using your pump.  If you may be on the go pumping a lot, it's worth having as you may need to pump somewhere you have neither your car nor an outlet.

  • I personally love my Medala PISA. I have used the battery pack a couple of times, both when I left my plug at work on accident over the weekend. I like the letdown button and sometimes just push it more than once if once was not sufficient or if I'm trying to trigger more letdowns.

  • Some good points to think about!! Is hygeia really that small a company?! My insurance will let me get now because I'm a month away so that's not a concern and for the most part I plan on pumping at work with an outlet. But is guess I just am afraid that I'll be in more situations than I can think of now that I won't have a power option!
  • is doing the "let down" manually difficult? or does anyone have any experience with using the let down button vs. manually doing it?
  • I love the car adapter. I recently took a trip away from DD and it was nice to pump in the car. It's also nice if you are out in public and wish to pump for a bottle rather than nurse in public.

  • I have found the battery pack helpful but not as strong and direct power. I use the letdown button a lot because I let down easily so it helps reduce pumping time.
  • I have two Medela pumps, one with the letdown button and one without.  I get identical output from both.

I've used my battery pack 3 times in about 1.5 years of pumping for both my daughters.
