Phantom pregnancy does not account for why she was telling people she was having FIVE babies! I know it does happen, but where did the magic number of 5 come from?
I will say, for the longest time I was convinced this would happen to me - but once I heard the heartbeat and saw the baby now I believe he is in there!
I don't get this though, how long before someone did a medical test to verify, good grief..
I feel sorry for everyone involved but I just have to nitpick this a bit.
I'm surprised at the rather large mistake in this news report (especially coming from a Canadian news station): the headline of the newpaper they show right in the report reads "Congratulations, you're expecting quadruplets" not quintuplets. All the photos they show of donated goods are in sets of 4 not 5. I don't doubt the story is true just that it's being reported with an error.

I think it's because she went from twins -> triplets -> quads (which I'm assuming is the stage the newspaper is from and some of the donations -> quints (possibly after seeing the haul 4 fake babies got her - figured 5 would be even better).
I have no idea how long it's been since she came up with the quint story though
Ah, yes that could be the reason @MorseBrooks. I was just really surprised that a major (and might I add bilingual) news station in this country would get that fact wrong. But it also just annoys me that they show the newspaper article with what seems to be an erroneous title in the first place in the report - they could have just as easily shown only the pictures.
I feel so bad for the boyfriend although I would have been suspicious if I never saw an ultrasound. Oh the embarrassment! Good for him returning the items and thank goodness she's getting help but this is just unreal! Unfortunately it's not the first phantom pregnancy story this year.
I honestly think he needs a mental evaluation as well. How in the hell would anyone just take their wife's word that she's pregnant with 5 with no proof? I mean I can understand convincing a dude you're pregnant with a fake pee stick and telling him you've been going to the doctor - but with 5? He just sounds stupid.
I'm sad for the whole situation. I can't imagine that the BF was very involved or read up much. Is it even possible for quints to go full term? I'm not sure how this wasn't questioned earlier. So weird! And sad.
Maybe she told him she didn't want him to miss work to go to appointments. There are crazy women who convince their SOs they are pregnant and then go steal a baby one day and the guy is like "yup this is normal" No, "Why wasn't I there for the birth or any appointments" weird! If I was him I would have wanted to go to appointments and hear about the babies. DH goes to all my appointments same with when I was pregnant with DD.
I recently read about Mary Tudor ,king Henry viii daughter, who had two phantom pregnancies. She was 13 months pregnant before it was just never mentioned again. The same thing happened again which is a whole different story when you consider the medical knowledge of the time. It is hard to believe it could happen in modern times.

I feel like with her history (if true) this is way more sinister than a psychotic episode / phantom pregnancy
