Chapped baby hands

Hunter had started to chew on his hands like crazy and they are getting super chapped. We live in a very arid climate. What would you put on them that doesn't contain chemicals and won't upset his digestive system? Coconut oil? It just doesn't seem like coconut oil is thick enough to do the job.
