baby clothes rant

In September, she was wearing winter clothes in 9 months.  At Christmas, 12 months only.  The many relatives we see only at Christmas always buy her winter clothes for the next year, so we have a lot of 24 month clothes.  Now she can't wear many 12 month clothes and we are having to get some 18 month winter clothes.  She has inherited her father's torso, so already the 24 month shirts are slightly too short.  She has a big head, so depending on the brand, she can't wear any size of some clothes.  Some 12 month pants, most 18 month pants, and all 24 month pants are too long, but many 12 months pants are too tight.  Plus, people keep giving us jeggings, which make no sense.  They don't come up enough to cover her behind, even with a trim disposable diaper, and with her shirts too short, her there is a huge amount of diaper showing.  Since the jeggings don't fit at her waist, they slide down, and then the inseam slides down and inhibits her legs from moving.  Um, yeah, my baby can't walk well, but that's because she has terrible pants.  Plus, I think her feet grew two sizes in the last few weeks, and now she can't wear shoes we were saving for walking outside after the snow melts.  Does anyone else struggle like this?  I am starting to suspect that we're going to have to start shopping higher-end brands and just not use what a lot of old relatives buy at Kohls.  She needs clothes cut for babies rather than teens, with give and buttons or similar around the neck.  Rant over.

Re: baby clothes rant

  • DS' clothes almost never fit all that well. I've kind of just accepted it.

  • Yeah, we are not the type to be picky, but she has to be able to walk.  I can use leg warmers to sort of shore up the too long legs on her pants, but with diaper changing now a huge battle, they often don't get put back on.  DH won't even put her pants back on after a diaper change, but brrr.  If I have to wear pants to be warm, so does she.
  • E skipped 9 Months and I didn't want to replace clothes in the middle of winter, so I put him into 18 mo and they were big for a while. Unfortunately, clothing is like toys, and my in-laws don't listen or buy anything I would purchase for my kids. So I have a bunch of clothes that the kids barely wore. :( baby clothes sizing is stupid too. Just imagine trying to for a cloth diaper in that sizing mix too!

  • We just roll up too-long pants. It's not super cute, but it's functional.

This is what we do too. 18 months pants fit him around his giant buddha belly but are too long. :P

We have found the few brands that fit my kids well.  They are very long through the torso but slim so they need length but not width.  Stuff from Gap, Old Navy, and Carter's tends to be cut boxy--short and wide.  But Children's Place, H&M and Jumping Bean brand from Kohl's tend to fit them pretty well.  H&M is the best for my kids, we love their stuff.
We need to opposite brands!  Everyone buys us Jumping Beans but they totally don't work.  Carter's is best for us, but she can't do matching pants and shirts because she's too tall for the shirts when the pants fit.  Gap is cut too lean, Children's Place is just all wrong for some reason--the clothes don't stay on well.  We have never tried H&M or Old Navy.  Perhaps will try ON, since it sounds like it may work and it's not pricey.

As for rolling--even tight rolls come down.  She's so wiggly and rolling around on the floor all the time...if I don't secure the roll with a leg warmer, it's down within 15 minutes.  And since she does not like me to mess with her pants and runs away, it is not reasonable to reroll very often.  I suspect I might have a more feral baby than some.
  • DD wore 3 month clothes until Christmas (10 months old) then wore 6 months clothes for no time at all and now has moved on to 9 months because the 6 months are too short......I have no idea if 9 months will get us through the summer or if I should be getting some 12 month too for when she needs them.

Related but not related....I hate baby shoes. Until now she has gone barefoot because she does not leave shoes or socks on. She needs hard soled shoes move up to the next room at daycare since they play outside but she doesn't walk. I'd like some tennis shoes type shoes or whateve that will be harder to take off. There in lies my problem. I have not been able to find ANY hard soled (appropriate for outside) shoes that come any smaller than a size 2. The problem is that most of the size 2's are way too big on her. I finally found one pair that fit. They are kinda clunky thought so not very good for learning to walk and not so cute......but I guesss they work :-( So frustrating!

Try a consignment store.  I don't know where these people got them, but there are tons of teeny tiny Air Jordans and other stylish and cute shoes with soles at my local store in perfect condition, since probably these people bought them before they had babies at all and then never actually put them on.
  • We are still in Carter's 6 and 9 month stuff. I asked people at his birthday for 12 month summer clothes, but I think they will still be too big at this rate. I always leave the tags on now until the correct season, because I have a tiny boy and I don't want to have a bunch of clothes that don't fit.
  • We buy everything at consignment/thrift shops, Walmart, and the "outlet" (i.e. where they send the reject mis-sews) strip mall Old Navy/Children's Place/OshKosh. We only buy jeans that have the stretchy button adjusters (my guys have the opposite problem - they're tall enough for 18mo pants, but their little butts still wear 9mo waistlines - so I end up cinching their pants down to the lowest adjuster), and shirts are all cheap stretchy cotton, or zip or button fronts for Simon's "nice" sweaters and things (his head is huge). We are very direct with family and ask them to never buy anything but Tshirts and jeans, because they are all-year clothes. We can always layer sweaters and jackets ourselves.
