Breastfeeding

To make a complaint or not

I had let my employer know well before my leave that I was going to breastfeed and would need a space to express milk. I ended up extending my leave by a couple of weeks for several reasons. When I came back, they were not prepared, the first day our HR person was out so I used her office, she had told me I could use the building next door (which is a pain but I was willing to make it work) then there have been numerous excuses as to why I couldn't use that building, so I asked if I could have a curtain and use the vacant office near my desk, I have pumped in a bathroom way more than in a private place... I am frustrated... And now I get an email that says I can no longer use that office because my new manager (long story- they have my promotion away while I was on leave that had already been given to me sometime ago). Needless to say, I am not pleased. I sent HR the email I received that the office would no longer be available to me asking where I am allowed to go. I live 2 blocks away... If they can't come up with an acceptable place by EOB Monday, I am tempted to tell them I am working from home until they figure it out... I have been back 2 weeks and concerned that the inconsistency in my ability to find a place to pump when needed and pushing it off will adversely affect my supply. Mostly I am venting, but should I lodge a complaint if they can't come up with a suitable environment? How much time should I give them to comply since I already let them know before my leave. I have tried to be flexible but now I am just angry.

Re: To make a complaint or not

  • Yes!! You should complain. It's my understanding that they have to provide a place for you to pump!

Yep, I would complain!  I work in a packed office with zero space, but for last baby and this one they've bent over backwards to find a space for me.  They can surely figure out something for you!!

  • Yes, file a complaint.  It sounds like you have already expressed your concerns and they have not made the proper accomodations.  A formal complaint might be the nudge they need to get you a space to pump.

  • Agreed - look up the law and then file a complaint. Set a timeframe that you're willing to wait for compliance. I would not, however, threaten to work from home. Making threats like this will only make you look bad - keep the upper hand and play by the rules, making them look like the bad guy (which they are!).

In the meantime, can you pump from home since it's so close? Maybe that's a good option for you until they come up with a suitable arrangement.

  • I just want to tell them to fix their lunch in the bathroom... And see how good they feel about eating it. I left work today and let them know I would return when I had a place to use. One of my reps is going to be on vacation the remainder of this week so I will be back tomorrow and use his office. There is a lot of emotion right now for me... I used to love my job, the company and people I work with but I am completely miserable. I also let my 'new' manager know that calling me out in her email was inappropriate. Everything over the last yet since I became pregnant has been handled very poorly. I refuse to shed anymore tears at work. I should have just gone home sick because I didn't sleep well last night and got so frustrated today that I just couldn't stand it, I was either going to scream and bite someone's head off or burst into tears. I really want to quit but can't... So I'm polishing my resume and starting feelers in my network on openings... DH is ready for a move so we may relocate if we both find something.
  • Thank you ladies! They did rectify the issue on Monday afternoon and I returned on Tuesday. I am still unhappy but this to shall pass, my supply dipped a bit but I am still freezing a full day at the end of the week. She is only taking 5-8 ounces during the day and then nursing at home and more thru the nights, I am getting plenty of wet diapers and we cloth diaper so I know what she's done during the daytime.
