February 2013 Moms

Help me find a new TV series.

We don't have cable, but I do like to binge watch TV series.  In the last five years I've watched these entire series:

LOST
Little House on the Prairie
The Waltons
Dr. Quinn
West Wing
Big Love
24
Mad Men
Downton Abbey
Call the Midwife
The Walking Dead
The Tudors
and I'm nearly finished with Homeland.

I tried watching Game of Thrones and The Vikings and couldn't get into them.

My favorite series so far has been 24.  I also loved West Wing.

Anyone have a good recommendation?  I'm looking for something with several seasons that will last me a while.

Re: Help me find a new TV series.

  • Scandal is so good IMO. I like Vikings. Grey's anatomy (that'll keep ya busy for a good whole since it's been on for YEARS now). ???

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • Law & Order? That would keep you going for like a decade! Lol

    We like:
Eureka (off air :(( ) Netflix. Super cute and funny
Haven (4 seasons, coming back in September) Netflix kind of spooky cute
Alphas (only 2 seasons, boo) Netflix
    Big Bang Theory CBS
CSI Las Vegas and New York (never got into Miami) Netflix and CBS
Charmed (I own all 8 seasons) Netflix
    Stargate Dvd
    Stargate Atlantis dvd
    But Stargate Universe was stupid
    ER dvd
Criminal Minds, but I fast forward a lot of the graphic parts. DVD but probably too graphic
Unforgettable CBS and coming back I think June?

I think that's all for now! Lol

  • These are all great ideas, ladies!  Thanks!

I'm not big on relationship dramas.  I love politically themed shows, so it looks like there's a lot to choose from here.

And I don't know why I never thought of ER.  I used to love that show.

  • Oh, and I won't sleep at night if I watch Law and Order.  I can watch zombies all day and not worry, but you start throwing out real-life monsters/criminals and I get panicky thinking about how they could harm my babies.

  • You might really like Eureka. It's not too political, but it's really a light hearted comical save the world show that is theoretical science based (read futuristically plausible) I love love love it!

This is the same reason I hesitate to start Homeland.  I want to watch it, but IDK if it will be an anxiety trigger.  I LOVED Breaking Bad but I had horrible dreams while I was watching it.
For some reason, the whole terrorism thing doesn't get to me in the same way.  I mean, I loved 24 - I think it's my favorite show ever.

But stories about rape, kidnapping, and murder in normal, everyday settings.  Ayayay.  Those Dateline and 20/20 stories give me nightmares for weeks.  The criminals always seem so normal - like your wonderful elderly neighbor could have body parts in his freezer or something.  I just can't with that stuff.  It's not entertaining to me.

ETA - Homeland has been OK.  I don't think the acting is that great.  There was a lot of hype and it didn't live up to it.  Certain scenes are amazing, but overall it's "meh".

  • I'm the same way. That's why I ff through parts of criminal minds. I wouldn't watch, but DH likes it and I do rarely get to spend time with him right now. I suck it up and make him ff, lol! And I can't watch SVU or L&o Criminal intent. Too much bad. But the original l&o wasn't too terrible.

  • I love Vikings. But I also l love Revenge

  • The Wire!
I like a lot on your list and also recommend house of cards but there are only two seasons thus far. The wire is one of the greatest shows ever created! My husband watched it the second time around with me after we were married. I'm jealous of people who've not seen it yet!

  • I recently watched Justified. It is in its last season.
  • I also second (or third)

    House of Cards
    Breaking Bad

    as @Sagen suggested for comedies
    Malcolm and the Middle
    Scrubs

I suggest How I Met Your Mother and Parenthood

I am loving Friday Night Lights even if I tend to hate football. Also second Twin Peaks if you have not seen it. Right now we are watching Scandal and I have mixed feelings about it.
I forgot about Friday Night Lights.  I watched that while pregnant with DD2.

  • I love the office, that is a great one to binge watch! Especially since the episodes are 30 minutes you feel like you haven't watched all that much and then all the sudden there goes your whole day!

I also love modern family. It is still on the air but first 4 seasons are available.

We're old-school whovians.  I've seen every episode from the Tom Baker years.  DH is just now going through the newer seasons, but I chose to skip them.

I couldn't find it at the library or video store the last time you suggested it.  I don't have Netflix.  If you think I would like it that much, I should probably just buy it used off of Amazon.  I can always sell it back if I hate it.

  • My vote is for breaking bad.

Is anyone else a fan of The Office?

YES!  I always tell people to watch The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Rec BUT I think you have to watch them all the way from the beginning, or it's difficult to enjoy them as much.  No jumping in on season 6 with new episodes ;)

    Parenthood is VERY good.

I agree. I wasn't wild about The Office until I watched it from the beginning when I was on maternity leave with my first child

Proud Momma to two beautiful children!!!

  • I second (or third?) Parenthood.

    Also, Parks and Rec.

Parks and Rec definitely! The first season was slow, but it got sooo much better afterwards.

I thought you did have Netflix. Any of the shows I've suggested are on DVD or amazon too.

I think you have to rent it on netflix.

I want you to watch it enough to make me burn you copies of it and send them to you. If you love Little House and the Waltons so much I think you"ll really like it. I wanted to live in Avonlea so bad when I was watching the show growing up. Its so Idyllic but its also so fun and can be really poignant, depending on the episode. It won a TON of Emmys back in the day and EVERYONE guest stared on it bc it was such a good show.

  • I'll look for it on amazon first.  :)

  • There's some controversy surrounding the show's DVD release.

Make sure that you get a new widescreen release from the Sullivan company from Amazon.

There is no perfect release of this show. The Sullivan releases do not have the theme music and the widescreen is rigged. But Disney owns the us rights to the show and their DVD version is drastically edited. So, just don't buy the Disney version. Also, the first DVD version from Sullivan is not very good quality.

You want the new Sullivan company DVDs of Road to Avonlea.
The amazon reviews for the listing you are viewing should help you find the right one but I am going to search for a link on the meantime!

It is not cheap, but it is sooooo worth it!

The Disney release is only 15.00 on amazon but it is four hours shorter. Not worth it.

The series has 7 seasons and a Christmas special. The Christmas special is not as good as the show but as a fan I enjoyed it.

DH likes it too and it is a show you can watch with the whole family.

Keep me posted. I'm gonna get you watching this show! :)

Yikes!  Season 1 used it over $30.  That's not gonna happen.

  • Darn!

Here is a link to the first episode anyway:

I love that show! I was so sad when PBS stopped airing it. I may have to but then. :). Check out the libraries! A lot of libraries carry that series. Of course June doesn't, they don't have DVDs at all. Poo on them.
