Working Moms

how do you squeeze in gym time?

I gained 20 pounds PP and i havent shed it off yet :( i cried again last night because DH mentioned that i was not this big a year and a half ago. I try to curb my meals and be active but i just cant pin down a regular gym sked. Can you share yours to me? Im thinking of hitting the gym 3x a week (we have one near our place). I only have one LO who's 3 and i work full time. For now the only exercise i do is walking during the weekends (1-2 kilometer leisurely stroll). TIA

Re: how do you squeeze in gym time?

  • I hit the treadmill in my basement at 5:15 am before my usual 6 am shower.  Can you go to your gym when they open in the morning, while your family is still asleep/wakingup?

When the weather finally warms up, I usually take time at lunch to go for a walk, maybe a mile at a time.

You could try letting your DH do your daughter's bedtime and heading over to the gym while they're busy, if exercising at night works for you.

  • I either go to the gym during my lunch break or work through my lunch break, leave work early and go to the gym before picking up LO from daycare. The weather is starting to get a little nicer around here so I also fit in a walk with LO. Some days I will wear her for these walks and do lunges. Her extra weight on my body makes the workout more challenging.

  • thank you ladies. I figured i can wake up earlier at least 2-3 times during the work week, and just continue the walking/stroll taht we do during weekends. Hopefully i could trim off excess weight. Well not just for DH but for my health as well. I was just happy that when our Annual Phys Exam results came up im still considered normal, and blood chem levels are fine. :)

@k3am apparently he is in improved shape as he is the slightly athletic type :( oh well! he will see.

    Thank you again ladies!

  • I go after work 2 days a week and I take my son to the gym daycare. I also go on Satuday mornings.  The gym daycare is a lifesaver and I would never be able to go otherwise!  He loves playing with the other kids in the daycare so I don't feel so guilty about going.  I try to make it 3x a week for an hour spinning class. When it was nice out, I used to running with him in the jogging stroller.

  • I also get up at 5:15-5:30am to work out 2-3 days a week.  I either jump on the treadmill, or I do a 20-30 min circuit workout.  I borrowed most of it from 30 day shred.  I also try to get a longer run in one day during the weekend.

It was tough for me to get in a rhythm, but I really feel so much better when I work out.  I'm trying to lose the last of my baby weight (DD2 is a year old... no more excuses).  It's harder now that I'm older (38).

    Good luck!
  • I go to the gym at lunch 4 days a week right now (DH has a grad school class one morning, so I go into work later that day).  I work for a university and we have free gym membership.  It's only about a 5-minute walk each way.  I do a high-intensity workout for 30-40 minutes, take a quick shower, and am back to my office.

I still need to overhaul my diet to put a dent in my PP weight after having 2U2, but working out at least lets me feel a little better for now.

  • Before LO I was an avid runner. Since LO I barely have time to walk the dogs. A month ago I decided I needed to get more exercise because every day I did I felt so much happier and slept better. Unfortunately DH also had to work late every night for the last month, so all of my exercising was simple resistance training or pilates at home while LO played on the floor. It didn't do much weight wise but it did help keep me sane.

Now that DH is done with his crazy work schedule and able to pick LO up from daycare I'm planning to work out 3-4 days a week during lunch and once on the weekend (this is about how often I used to work out pre-pregnancy and during a good portion of my pregnancy). I'm on a social football team so that's my weekend workout, plus a walk or two with the dogs. And I have a gym here at work so I can run down during lunch to either hit the treadmill or do weights, or if its nice outside go for a run outside.

  • I agree with PP that if DH is 'encouraging' you to exercise, then he needs to help with childcare duties to free you up.  DH and I both play on sports teams and have regularly scheduled practices that we put into our home calendar.  Since we both enjoy getting out to play sports/exercise, we both just cover the other one's schedule so we are both able to get out without being stressed.  We both prefer running in the evening though, so it's a bit easier as we tend to get out after dinner when things are relatively calm.  Ask when he can take over with LO so you can get out to the gym.

  • I don't do the gym, but I do try to get in lots of activity. I play on the floor with DD, and before I was pregnant I used her as a 20 lb weight to do leg lifts, and we do lots of yoga. (She kicks my butt at downward-facing dog, and she can now balance better than I can in just about every pose!). For me, it was about changing my mindset. I stopped thinking of it as needing "gym time" and thought of it as "needing to show DD that being a strong, healthy woman mentally and physically is important". Now I make more time for it, and we spend most of the exercise time giggling and having fun.
  • I don't have time to go to the gym (plus it's expensive and germy), so we have a treadmill in the basement.  I try and get in a brisk walk every day for about 20-30 minutes, usually right after the kids go to bed.  I had gained between 5-10 pounds around the holidays, so this is my New Year's resolution, and so far I usually make it about 5 of 7 days a week.  I've lost the extra holiday weight and I'm working on a few extra pounds before Spring Break.  When the snow finally melts, it will be great to run around outside with the kids after dinner, and get some exercise that way.

  • We own a treadmill and I get on it every day at 5 a.m. or after DD's bedtime for an hour.  I also go to the gym at my work during lunch a couple times a week for cardio and lifting.

If you're trying to lose weight, you should probably work out more than 3X per week and "leisurely" strolls aren't going to do it.

You should also really look at your diet and make sure it's balanced and keep the calories down.

  • @K3am i just get frustrated because whenever he volunteers to do childcare or any other chore, either he gets it wrong, or he will be calling or texting me to ask whatever question he has in  mind. oh well. I bought DVDs for Zumba. Hopefully that could help. :) thanks again!

I have a treadmill, hand weights, and a couple of workout DVD's that I do during lunch 3 days a week.  I also try and squeeze in another workout sometime during the weekend.

For me, it's all about scheduling a specific time to workout and keeping that schedule.
