I just received the Ameda PY Ultra as a shower gift, and wanted to know the major differences between that and the standard Ameda Purely Yours pump. From what I can tell, it's just several additional accessories. Are these necessary from your personal experience? Also, is the Ameda a reliable pump? I've heard good things about Ameda PY and Medela PIS. Thanks in advance.
Re: Ameda Purely Yours vs Ameda Purely Yours Ultra
It's no biggie either way because I will be saving a large cost, but I should consider if I need to purchase storage to tote it around I guess
Depending on the package the things my Ultra had that the standard PY did not was a car adapter, a different bag, a manual/handheld pump, and more sizes of adapter flanges. Both came with the cooler tote, slim ice packs that fit in that, six bottles with caps and sealing discs, the unit, the standard horns, and (different but each had one) a carrying case, and a couple extra replacement parts (the white valves which are the essential piece that you will need to replace - if your suction goes light replace these first and it usually fixes it, and diaphragms).
They functioned the same, made the same amount of noise, same amount of suction, all the parts are interchangeable and the bottles have the same threading/fit the Evenflo bottles (glass, plastic, and the 4 & 8oz ones).
You said you were given one in your shower so make sure you see what your insurance will cover - I know with mine getting the reimbursement after ordering on Amazon it ended up costing me like $5, even if it had been full price it would have been worth it for the convenience. Because I was exclusively pumping, and pumping longer and more often than most to build up a freezer supply for when I was working mine did die three times in the year and a half I was using it, so having a second was helpful while waiting for the replacement, when both were functioning I had one where I pumped at home and one to go to work with me.
As far as reliability, I did have both motors need to be replaced at one point or another, again I was pumping longer and more often that most do and exclusively pumping. When suction went low after trying different valves just to be sure, usually the machines sounded different, like a belt slipped out of place so it was turning but not doing anything. If it didn't turn on at all it was the power adapter cord having been mangled in my moving it around. They replaced the parts quickly, without hassle, even when I was pretty sure it was out of warranty, but having the second motor and adapter were a lot better than having to manually pump.
