Ameda Purely Yours vs Ameda Purely Yours Ultra

I just received the Ameda PY Ultra as a shower gift, and wanted to know the major differences between that and the standard Ameda Purely Yours pump. From what I can tell, it's just several additional accessories. Are these necessary from your personal experience? Also, is the Ameda a reliable pump? I've heard good things about Ameda PY and Medela PIS. Thanks in advance.

Re: Ameda Purely Yours vs Ameda Purely Yours Ultra

  • I think it is just the accessories.  I checked online since that was what my insurance sent to me...I ended up with the Purely Yours, but do not have any of the cool accessories.  I will have to buy those separate.

Same here - I'm most annoyed that I didn't get a carrying case with mine (they are currently sold out online) but what other "cool accessories" are there? I'm interested.
  • It comes with a tote bag for carrying the pump and accessories, 3 different sets/sizes of flanges, (4) 4 oz. bottles with lids, a milk cooler bag with 3 ice packs, an adapter to make the pump able to be used manually, and a car adapter. I think thats all the extras that are included. Someone can add if I have missed something.

  • The cooler bag I plan to purchase separately and the car adapter.  In fact, I LOVE that cooler bag idea and know it will be very helpful.  I was also looking at the packs of additional bottles.  Just not sure they are necessary if I carry extra storage bags with me...

  • Our insurance says they will be sending us the Ameda Purely Yours double electric pump. I looked it up online, but the one I saw looked like it came with accessories, should I assume if it's via insurance there may not be a carrying case included?

It's no biggie either way because I will be saving a large cost, but I should consider if I need to purchase storage to tote it around I guess :)

  • Mine came with a carrying bag (through insurance), just no accessories.

  • I have heard the Ameda PY is annoying because it's louder and has a beeping sound? Is this on the newer Ameda models as well? I wouldn't mind using the Medela, but I really love the idea that the Ameda is a closed system.
  • I have both (hooray for the company switching insurance a couple months after delivering so I ended up with two basically free). The Ultra has the extra accessories, had a better power adapter though I think they've changed it (the regular PY was one of those brick style on the outlet where the Ultra was about a third the size and therefor easier to use on a power strip), and the Ultra had rounded motor/base rather than the slightly blockier one on the PY.

Depending on the package the things my Ultra had that the standard PY did not was a car adapter, a different bag, a manual/handheld pump, and more sizes of adapter flanges. Both came with the cooler tote, slim ice packs that fit in that, six bottles with caps and sealing discs, the unit, the standard horns, and (different but each had one) a carrying case, and a couple extra replacement parts (the white valves which are the essential piece that you will need to replace - if your suction goes light replace these first and it usually fixes it, and diaphragms).

They functioned the same, made the same amount of noise, same amount of suction, all the parts are interchangeable and the bottles have the same threading/fit the Evenflo bottles (glass, plastic, and the 4 & 8oz ones).

You said you were given one in your shower so make sure you see what your insurance will cover - I know with mine getting the reimbursement after ordering on Amazon it ended up costing me like $5, even if it had been full price it would have been worth it for the convenience. Because I was exclusively pumping, and pumping longer and more often than most to build up a freezer supply for when I was working mine did die three times in the year and a half I was using it, so having a second was helpful while waiting for the replacement, when both were functioning I had one where I pumped at home and one to go to work with me.

As far as reliability, I did have both motors need to be replaced at one point or another, again I was pumping longer and more often that most do and exclusively pumping. When suction went low after trying different valves just to be sure, usually the machines sounded different, like a belt slipped out of place so it was turning but not doing anything. If it didn't turn on at all it was the power adapter cord having been mangled in my moving it around. They replaced the parts quickly, without hassle, even when I was pretty sure it was out of warranty, but having the second motor and adapter were a lot better than having to manually pump.
