Rec your backseat mirror

LO's carseat is in the middle and each side seat has a headrest (we have an Equinox if it matters).  We have the mirror on the passenger side backseat headrest.  But no matter how I adjust it, I cannot see LO in the mirror when looking in my rearview.  I think ours is a Britax.  It will still likely be a few weeks before I drive with her anywhere by myself, but I know I will be very paranoid if I cannot see her.  Anyone love their mirror?

Re: Rec your backseat mirror

  • I just got one Friday at target before my first long drive with lo. (Long being 45 minutes) haha. I just got the Eddie Bauer one I think. So far so good though.

My SIL has this one and loves it so I got it too. No personal experience with it yet though:

  • Not using one as I know I distract easily and I think me glancing at LO in the mirror all the time is too risky.

  • Not using one for two reasons -- the first being that if you are in an accident, it can be a very dangerous projectile. Second, I imagine I would get distracted. Just my two cents -- even though I know that wasn't your question.

I find both of these arguments kind of funny. If you have anything in your car not secure (drink?) that is more likely to become a projectile than a mirror that is securely in place.

As far as a distraction, if you glance in your rear view to look at other cars, look down to change the radio, heat/air...those are all just as much of a distraction. Maybe you never take your eyes off the road, then this would be a distraction.

I know it sounds strange -- we so make sure everything is secure (we typically don't have drinks in the car). I'll have to find the story about the toddler that was in an accident with a sippy cup...it did a lot of damage and nearly scalped him. It's very much so a personal choice.

Well that is my point. A cup is not secure, the mirror is.

Well that is my point. A cup is not secure, the mirror is.

Like I said, personal choice and my point is there is no safety testing/minimum industry standards with these types of things so there is no way to determine if they are considered secure and would stay in a crash. And you asked about other projectiles and I answered to the specific example regarding drinks.

It is something to research and talk with a certified car seat technician. The FB group car seats for the littles has this discussion quite often regarding safety.

Again, do your research, determine your risks, and make a choice. I don't think there is a right or wrong in parenting and these types of choices....it is just deciding what is right for you. My opinion and choice is valid to me and my family and might not be for others. I just wanted to offer another side I the mirror purchase.
