Updated: Possible mucous plug... Freaked out

I took a shower this morning and then got out and noticed a glob of thick and sticky mucous with bright red blood in it on the bottom of the tub. I picked it up with a tissue, and after googling, it looks and sounds just like the mucous plug. I have had no unusual discharge or spotting as of right now. I emailed my dr and he said to stay off my feet and to come in for a sonogram tomorrow evening. I feel like this is so far away, and my mom suggested I go to the ER. I'm really stressed about this. I think it might make sense to go to the ER in case I'm dilated at all. Has anyone else had any experience with this? I'm only 15 1/2 weeks btw.

Update: I emailed the dr and asked if I should go to the ER and I was really stressed out. He told me to go to L&D instead. They checked my cervix with the speculum and t/v ultrasound and a regular ultrasound. Everything looked normal, and she said it could have been from stress, and to call back if it happens again. Obviously, I feel a lot better... The bonus was I got a sneak peak of our brand new L&D ward :) Thanks for all your positive thoughts!

No experience, @Smallllmin‌ but if you aren't comfortable waitng until tomorrow to feel more comfortable, go to the er. I do know that mucus plugs can grow back if they are still needed. Also, try to focus on that your doctor isn't concerned. I hope it's nothing, good luck. (Hugs)

  • If you do go to the hospital, I'd recommend going to labor & delivery triage instead. You'll get the OB on call, they'll have the right equipment for the sonogram, and (in my experience) was less expensive than the ER. It was a trick my OB told me last time.

I would just follow your doctor's orders on this....

eta- going to the er just causes added stress, more money out of pocket, and possible bad advice from an er doc. I trust my ob over an er doc

I would follow your doc's instructions and take it easy.  A mucous plug will regenerate if that is truly what it was.  I wouldn't assume it was though...it was likely some funky discharge.  Unless you are having stomach pains (contractions) I would wait until tomorrow.  There is nothing they would be able to do at the ER anyways except an ultrasound.

I agree with all this. Sorry you're having a scare!

  • If an ER visit was really needed I really think your doctor would have to told you to go.

I would just follow your doctor's order -- keep off your feet, rest, relax, (I would add drink tons of water) and then go into the office tomorrow.

Good luck!!! Let us know how it goes and what you end up doing.

  • Hang in there!  As others said, if your doc didn't send you to L&D or the ER, it's probably not urgent.  And you aren't having contractions.

Rest up and let us know how the sono tomorrow goes!
