UTI for Delivery?

I go in for my induction (Type 2 diabetic- 39 week induction) tomorrow.

Today I peed on an OTC UTI screen and it was positive. Not sounding like fun at all since I remember the pain I had after I delivered DD.

Has anyone experienced this? My OB called in sulfur for me to take today since I'm allergic to penicillin and can't take the usual drugs. He is hooking me up to IV antibiotics tomorrow as well. Any chance those are some magical drugs that will take it all away before I leave the hospital?

Please give me some reassuring news. If not, then at least I'll be prepared for an extra layer of ouch.

Go get real cranberry juice. I think that works wonders
That'll help with the discomfort a bit, but doesn't usually give me much relief. I used to get chronic UTIs and it hardly did anything more than just drinking tons and tons of water. Which is what I'm currently doing.

  • From my recollection uti drugs work really quick-- within a day or so. They do turn your pee scary shades of orange though.

I bet you'll be feeling relief by tomorrow and that the iv drugs will help even more. Good luck!

The UTI abx do work really quickly! OP, there is hope for you yet!

The thing that turns your pee bright orange is a med called phenazopyridine. It is available OTC under various names like "Azo" and "pyridium." It numbs the bladder so UTIs don't hurt.

I have no idea what pregnancy class it's in and am too lazy to look it up but if you check with your OB first as to whether you can take it, it might really help! It DOES turn your pee BRIGHT ORANGE though, and your pee will stain things. So if you're leaking, beware.
