Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2nd Birthday in just over a month and we have no idea what to do.

My DD's 2nd birthday is just over a month away and DW and I have no idea what to do for her party. At all. DD loves the sea and all things in it just now, so we were going to have an under-water theme party with some of DD friends and their parents, and all the family, but both DW and I and rather large families, so they can't actually all fit into our house. And we've kind of run out of ideas. Any suggestions?

  • That's still too many people really. With us and family its 42 people, and we really don't have that much room.

  • I would either skip the friends or do two seperate parties - one for friends and one for family. How many people can your house hold? If you invite 42 people, you definitely won't get that many. You could also look into doing it someplace other than your home.

The flat can only reasonably hold about 20 - maybe 25 at a stretch. And we know at least 30 people are definetly coming, since they've already got their flights booked.

Then it sounds like your house isn't an option. Look into your local childrens places - museums, monkey joes, chuck e cheese, a kid friendly restaurant, zoo, a play place, etc. You could also look into renting a space at a park or community center. You are definitely cutting it close though with a month to go.

  • What about a swimming pool? Indoor rec center? Or you could split it and have more than 1 party or open house style and ask 1 half to come earlier and the others later.

  • ^I love the idea of doing it at an indoor pool! Lends itself perfectly to an underwater theme, and it's always fun and campy to see your loved ones in their bathing suits, especially when it's still cold outside! (But then again, as long as there's a "party room" nearby, people can totally just sit around and chat and watch the fun.)
  • I just went to a bowling themed 2nd birthday party. It was pretty cute- they had two lanes set up for the kiddos, with the lane bumpers and that slope/guide thing that the bowling ball rolls down. All the parents were able to supervise and play a few games at the lanes on either side of the kid lanes. The bowling alley actually set up the whole birthday table for the kids, cake, and balloons. I would estimate there were about 15 kids and 15 adults there. It was more than I plan on doing for my DD's party, but was still pretty low key and stress free, and it seemed like everyone had a great time. It was not very expensive, either.

Can you just do immediate family?
We did a big party for DD last year when she turned 1 with all close friends (most of which have kids) and all our family but we did extended family too (our aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.)

I didn't want a big party again this year so we just did our close friends and immediate family (just our parents and siblings)

That is just immediate family. We both have very large families.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! We have hired out our local swimming pool for a few hours, and are also inviting some close friends and some of DD's nursery friends and their parents.
