The tingles and losing feeling in hands and feet.

So the swelling officially started BIG time yesterday.  Took off my boot after spending lunch with friends and my ankle was all distorted in "boot wrinkles".  Laid down with the  feet elevated for a few hours to get them down.

I am also starting to experience my hands, fingers, or a foot going numb depending on what way I am sitting or laying.  I have a doc appointment on Tuesday or Wednesday, so I will ask then.

Is this all swelling related?  Do you have this happen often?  I was a big marshmallow my last PG, but did not get this fun, new thing that is becoming common quickly.

Re: The tingles and losing feeling in hands and feet.

  • I had some painful swelling earlier on in 2nd trimester. I havent been wearing my wedding rings as I had difficulty removing them then.

I think some swelling is normal and to be expected. Did you change the amount of liquids you were taking in recently?

As for tingling/numbness in limbs, I get this too. My left leg has been numb since early December and my OB told me it was just nerves being impacted by the position of the baby. I have noticed other extremities going numb depending on how I sit/lay.

  • I get the tingles in my right arm and hand often when I'm sleeping. I haven't had any issues with swelling yet (I am 31 weeks). When I get the tingles I just get up and walk around/change my sleep position which seems to help. I would def bring it up at your next appt. just to be safe.
  • I've had a numb left hand and a sore right hand since January. It's carpal tunnel, and the dr prescribed splints for me to wear at night so my hands stay in a neutral position and maintain circulation. At your next appt your dr can rule out anything more serious (like preeclampsia, which I'm also lucky to have grr) by your blood pressure and urine test. Good luck and kick it with your feet up this weekend! :)
  • My left foot is numb every day, with or without swelling. My hands get numb too especially if I've been walking and they're down. The tingly/numbness gets better when I put them up in a "freeze!" position. I figured it was LO laying all up on something in there...
  • I had the numbness with DS and this one. I had swelling with all three. I have noticed on the worse swelling days the numbness happens more. Usually when I lay on my left side.

OMG OMG OMG, yes. Swelling started at 32 weeks. I even posted this pic of my foot on Facebook:

  • Swelling is normal.  Sudden or severe swelling is not.  The tingling in my hands happened with my last pregnancy and I had pre-e... but hasn't happened yet this time.  Is there anyway you can get your BP checked now instead of waiting til Tuesday?

    This.

Swelling at this point in pg is pretty normal.  If it is sudden, especially if it is in your face/neck, that's worrisome.  The tingling in your hands could be carpal tunnel.  It's pretty common in pregnancy.  I had it with my last pg (which coincidentally also ended up with Pre-E).

Could you swing by a pharmacy and check your BP?  Most of them have those pressure cuff things.  Not the most reliable, but at least they'd maybe let you know if you are running high.

  • My Dr. said feet swelling is normal as long as it goes down after you put your feet up. But face and hands call your dr.

Definitely hit up your local drugstore for a quick BP screen. Eta: poor word choice. Even if your BP is normal, you will have that check to report to your dr.
  • I've been pretty swollen. My doctor took me off work for that and elevated bp. For me water helps a little but the bp is usually what makes it worse. Salty foods can make it worse but it's not the only thing. I had also gained about 6 lbs in 3 days (all water weight) and let my doctor know about that too.

Right now I don't have pre e because I have no protein in my urine and liver enzymes are normal. Swelling with the bp info will be good for your doc to know about.

Yup - carpal tunnel. It's the devil.

  • So experienced ladies, if hands/wrists going numb is carpel tunnel what is foot/feet going numb?
  • My heels, especailly the left one is numb sometimes when I rub it against my other foot I get the pins and needles feeling.  Then my outer right side of my knee is also numb and if I kneel down on it I get a shooting pain.  So most definitely normal.  My hands get numb at night due to the lack of blood getting to them.  Yoga teacher suggested I wear wrist braces to bed.  As for feet swelling, well lets say all I wear now is flip flops, wide flats and crocs.  Yeah.... crocs....  I miss wearing my cute fall/winter boots.
  • Obviously your doctor can tell you for sure, but I'd assume the tingling is all swelling related. This is prime time for carpal tunnel syndrome to start up. I started having trouble with CTS around 32 with my first, and sure enough, I'm just now starting to feel some tingles this time around too.

There's also a tarsal tunnel, so it makes sense that swelling in your legs and feet could irritate that too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarsal_tunnel_syndrome
