anyone have LO's with delays ?

edited March 2014 in Multiples
My boys are 20 mos old and still not walking alone. Carter (baby a) walks a few steps bur prefers hopping in his knees .... zander (baby b) wall walks and thats it! Both are jabbering as far a speech goes but i do get mama from carter! Their dr was concerned so i had them evaluated ..... the results were that they are delayed in every area! I just dont see it ... i think that they are jumping the gun a little! I think that they are well on their way to walking by themselves and trying to talk! They were horn at 37 weeks and 4 days, weights : 6 lb 13.5 oz and 6 lb 15 oz! Havent posted for a long time ! Any thoughts or anyone who has experienced this?

I haven't experienced this, but I think it's worth considering what your pediatrician is saying and asking lots of questions. They probably want to be proactive and provide some early intervention if that's what is necessary. A delay isn't necessarily bad or indicative of something wrong, a lot depends on if other milestones are being met and if there are other "symptoms" of an underlying cause. When you say every area, what was evaluated? Gross/fine motor, social, speech, etc?

ETA: If I remember right, walking is considered delayed if a child isn't walking by 18 months. Most babies start walking independently around 12 months old.

My boys are speech delayed. I've had them in the EI program getting therapy since they were about 20m. 1 of my kids probably would have been fine without it but the other for sure needs it, even now and they'll be 4 in the fall. Don't worry about labels like "delayed". Just think of it as free helpful programs that your kids will think are fun and that you will hopefully benefit from too. It doesn't hurt to get them therapy if they're qualified for it.
  • Thanks i do appreciate your opinion! I have appointments set up ! Im hoping to find some twin moms who may be dealing with the same issues! Its hard to have a child with delays but 2 wirh delays is a definite chalkenge ! Btw i noticed the board has changed .... i cant seem to find my profile that had my pics!
  • Early intervention is super important and in most cases will help children catch up. Glad to hear you got evaluated and is seeking help, I bet having two does make it harder :)

There is no reason from what you said to think things can't improve!
  • They were evaluated for gross and fine motor, social, cognitive, expressive communication! Actually since the eval zander has started wall walking where he wasnt before and bith are verbalizing more! Im hopeful that they will improve even more! I also have a 14 year old son but never experienced any of these issues with him!
  • It is best to get them in therapies now. It is not 2 of my triplets but older DS has had delays since 10 months and in and out of therapies he is on spectrum though. One of my trio has severe delays did not walk till almost 2 still does not talk much at 2 she has CP. I would for sure be concerned about no walking at 20 months PT can do wonders.

  • I was a baby with all kind of delays from a very early age through about 5th grade. I now own my own business and have a big wig job at a top tier company. It will all be okay momma.

  • I teach preschoolers with disabilities and many of my kids have/had the delays similar to what you mentioned and received early intervention. Personally I would rather that my own kids got the help they need now rather when they are 6 7 8 and the delays are more significant.

  • Both of my boys received EI from birth really for delays in motor skills.  They walked close to 18 months which taking in to account their premature birth it was still within typical limits, but we wanted EI in their early to help move them along.  Joey also qualified at 18 months for a language delay but I'm the SLP in the EI in our area so we didn't take services at that time seeing it's be me servicing him.

Once they started walking and then talking closer to 2 they seemed to catch up pretty quickly.  They do both have epilepsy diagnosed shortly after they turned 3 years old, but that hasn't impacted them developmentally at this point.  I see ADHD diagnoses in our future though.

Ditto others that Early Intervention is key. It's not really 'easy' to qualify for (unless they were both truly having an off day and results might be misleading, though it does sound like there is a definite gross motor delay); generally children who qualify are ones who can truly benefit from services. So if they qualify, I would take EI up on whatever services they are offering.

One of my twins has been in therapies since he was 2.5. He was on the late end of normal with a lot of his earlier milestones but started falling farther behind as he turned 2 and beyond. He got PT, OT, and feeding therapy (with a speech language pathologist who also worked on some specific speech goals) through EI, plus weekly family training with an Early Interventionist. Then when he turned 3 he was evaluated for and qualified for services through the school system as well. All the therapies have kept us busy but they have made a HUGE difference for him.

Also, my boys were born at 37w6d and weighed 6.10 and 6.7. Prematurity can contribute to delays but full-term babies can have them too.

  • I hope that i didnt come off as not wanting to get them help ! I will definitely go with whatever EI tells me is best for the boys ..... i guess im just feeling nervous about the whole thing! To be honest i feel like maybe i did something wrong ..... being a single mom i feel alot of pressure because i always feel like i have to prove myself!i dont get much sleep these days because carter started waking up at night and my neighbor stomps on the floor! Nice neighbor! Lol im not sure how she can hear but she says she can! I always turned to this board for support after i had the boys and im glad that i came back! It helps to have support from someone who knows what its like to have multiples! Thanks ladies!
  • Totally understandable to feel nervous going into it. It's a lot to process and when you're first beginning, it's hard to know how (if at all) the delays will affect them down the road, what all the therapies will be like, etc. It can be overwhelming. Don't beat yourself up though; you're doing the best you can and your babies' delays most likely have nothing to do with you. You're doing what you can to get them the help they need and that's what matters now.
