Anyone use the formula specifically for supplementing?

So we are going to try supplementing with a little formula at night. I am SO exhausted and it is slowly killing me -- I think it's worse this time because I can't nap much when the baby does or sleep in since DD1 is always up and raring to go by 7. Anyway....I have been researching and think I may try the Enfamil or Similac for supplementation. If anyone uses those brands, how does your LO like it? I know everyone's baby is different, but I have no clue where to start as far as choosing a formula. I know I can call the pedi too tomorrow, but kind of wanted to get started tonight so I thought I'd see what you all think.

And once I decide on that, let's pray she actually takes the bottle... :/

  • We started with the similac for supplementation! It has more prebiotic to make sure it's a smoother transition on their tummy. We started off using the premade bottles, and then slowly switched to the powder. We had to go through a couple different bottles to find the one he liked but he really liked the nipples on the premade bottles for some reason. Good luck!

  • We give a bottle of formula for bedtime. We've used both Similac and Enfamil, and DD will take either just fine. The first 4 or 5 days trying to get her to take a bottle were slow going, and I often had to nurse her after just a few ounces because she'd gotten so frustrated. Now she downs 7 ounces like it's nobody's business.

  • We also do a bottle at bedtime, so I can pump and use that for stash. I don't make enough thru the day to stash anything else. We've used Enfamil gentlease or Target's version of it. Never had an issue.
  • Yeah, I was looking at the Similac premade bottles....mainly because I can get an 8-pack at BuyBuyBaby to start for pretty cheap, as opposed to buying a whole tub and it doesn't work for her. Good to know...thanks for the input/experiences!

  • Yeah, good idea to sample before buying a tub. Ethan was on Enfamil in the NICU so I knew he was okay with it.
  • We give one bottle at bedtime. She'll only take the Similac for Supplementation. I've tried other brands, but she screams and refuses them, so we've stuck with the Similac. I use the 2oz premade bottles. When you buy them at Target, they have a $2 coupon inside. I also get $5 Similac checks in the mail, so they're basically free when I combine the two.

  • You can also go to similac and sign up for freebies, the will send you a canister or similac for supplementing, some 2oz bottles, a canistar of similac gentle and I think a canister of regular similac. So worth signing up just for the checks and the samples. Enfamil will do the same, I just gave away all the samples I had cause LO can only use enfamil AR. And if your babes has reflux you migh want to look into the AR cause at night my babes spits up way less. I use the playtex airvents and they have nipples shaped like breast nipples to help with the confussion. I hope all that helps @swirl25

  • We BF or bottle of BM all day except a bottle of formula at night as well. She was on Enfamil newborn in the NICU and had some evidence of sensitivity so we switched to a sample of Similac Sensitive and she did fine on that. We use the Target brand of Similac Sensitive now. She's never had any issues taking formula over BM.

  • Love this thread!! Thank you OP for reading my mind! I was diagnosed with low supply by my LC last week and DD's weight is a concern for her pedi, so once my breast milk stash I have in the fridge runs out, we will have to supplement with formula. Unless the mother's milk tea, fenugreek and reglan start doing their job! FX

It sounds like premade bottles might be a better way to introduce formula. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

  • premade look weird and smell weird just be warned the milk looks darker then the stuff made from a can.

  • I've been following too, thanks @swirl25‌! I'm not supplementing yet, but it's good to know that the premade bottles seem to work pretty good! We also have the bottle problem OP...hope your LO takes one soon!

Quick question -- if LO is already used to bottles (of BM), can I put the formula in one of those and assume as long as she accepts the formula, the bottle shouldn't be an issue?

When I started DS1 on some formula, I had to half it with BM for awhile. Then 1/3 BM, then all formula. He never had an issue with bottles, but didn't like straight formula at first.

After that he went back and forth seamlessly.

  • Thanks again, ladies! All useful info. I got a pack of the Similac for supplementing and will try it out tonight - FX LO likes it!
