Let's talk about changing tables, please!

Do you need one?  Being a FTM I plan to buy everything and probably most of it I won't need.  A bunch of my girlfriends say I will NEVER use it and I get that since it will be on the 2nd floor of our house.  They say you will end up changing them on the floor.  Well with 2 large dogs anytime you sit on the floor they need to be all in your face.  I just feel it would be easier to have a changing table.  Are you buying one?  It would be great to have some STMs (or 3rd or 4th) weigh in here too!

Thanks!

Re: Let's talk about changing tables, please!

  • We got a low dresser and a changing pad and it worked fine for us. If we happened to be upstairs, we would use it (like in the middle of the night, or after bath time) but generally we spend our time downstairs on the first floor and always changed them on the floor.

  • We did a changing pad on the dresser in his room and then a portable pad that we put on the bed or couch or floor down stairs. For a while we used the changing station attached to the pack n play. We stopped when he reached the weight limit.

It's a personal decision. You will do what works for you.

  • Our plan is to get a pack and play with a changing station and use that until the weight limit is reached, then to just have a changing pad for either the floor, our bed, or wherever.

  • We don't have a two story house but when my son was a little guy I just changed him on our bed. When he got a little bigger I started using the changing table more. Now that he's almost 1 I use it once in awhile. I always use it when he poops though, it just made things easier for me. I still plan to use it with my second as well.
  • I got a dresser/changing table and used it for nighttime, after bath, morning changes. During the day we had a pack and play downstairs with a changing station on it. It was better on my back rather than the constant bending over and up and down. Not a necessity but it definetly help!

My mom got us a changing table dresser combo to match our crib. We still use it everyday and DS is 19 mo old. That being said we do have a fairly small ranch home and I wouldn't want a separate changing table from dresser, it would take up too much room IMO.

  • We put the changing pad on her dresser upstairs. The majority of the time, that's where we change her. We opted to do it that way though since she has a small room and we couldn't get a crib, dresser, and changing table in there. If we're downstairs, we either change her on the couch or floor, or just come upstairs.

  • I have one for DS and I love it. I use it all the time and he is 2 it is also upstairs and we live in a townhouse. I like having everything in one place. I also think it keeps him from wiggling around. On the rare occasion that I change him downstairs on the floor he tires to run away as soon as I take his diaper off. I will use the same one for this LO as well, bc I hope to have DS potty trained by the summer.

  • You definitely do not need a changing table. We did the changing pad on the low dresser in her room (on second floor) but for the first month or so had a towel folded on our master vanity for middle of the night changes. When downstairs we just changed her on the couch or walked upstairs. Its so not a big deal.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
  • We skipped a changing table and went with a pad on top of the dresser which we never used. Instead, I have had my cloth diapers and supplies in a caddy in the living room since she was born. That is where we spend the most time and it's been super convenient. We use a diaper bag changing pad and change her on the couch mostly, but the caddy and pad are portable so we carry it from room to room. We also kept a few diapers and wipes in the pack n play caddy for overnight changes. I would have hated to go to a designated area to always change a diaper especially those first few months.

  • We plan on getting one for the nursery (also 2nd floor). My niece and nephew's changing table was on the 2nd floor and we always just took them up and changed them there. Didn't seem like a big deal, but some people just don't want to. Do whatever is best for you :)

  • We never had one or missed one. We changed him on a pad on the floor or on our bed when he was still waking at night.

  • WE used a changing pad on the dresser. We also put the wipe warmer up there. I think I would have never used an actual changing table and it just took up alot of space in the room. We are doing the same thing for this next baby.

  • Everyone said I'd never use it. Aubrey is 18 mo and I still use it. Its much easier to clean pee and poop off of it rather than the bed or couch. And it gives you a little extra storage. Depending on the one you get, i have a carters convertible, I can take the rails off the top and use it as a regular table when she gets to big for it.
  • I'm a FTM too and I definitely don't plan on getting a changing table. We're going to be sharing our bedroom with our baby so we want to keep a limit of how much stuff we get. I plan to get a changing pad for the dresser for sure and a portable pad to use on the couch, bed, floor etc

I suggest having a changing area on each floor. We have a changing table on our first floor and a changing pad on top of a dresser in DD's room on the second floor. We still use them both regularly at 20 months.

  • I'm not planning on having a changing table. I plan on using a dresser with a changing pad on top. Since we only have one level I think that the dresser along with a changing pad in the living room area should be fine.
  • lo is almost a year old and it's still almost the only place we change him. To each their own.

  • We love ours and used it all the time when DS was younger. Ours has lots of storage underneath and tend to use it more for that now that we no longer need it (for the time being)!
  • I used one for all my 3 girls & will def use one with this baby. To me it was a lifesaver & I was able to put all important items on it . It was great to have everything I needed in arms reach at anytime . I had diapers , wipes, onesies, etc... Congratulations & most of all get what you feel you need. You'll know best:)
  • Three babies, no changing table. Not saying I wouldn't have wanted one, but it was something we saw as an extra with DS1.

  • Ours is on top of a low dresser and we still use it at almost a year. We live in a small one level house though. I think I would still have it in his room, even if we had a two storey.

  • With DS I didn't buy one at first b/c so many people said they never used it. MH wanted to get one so we did prob 2 weeks after DS was born and we have used it and still use it every day for diapers and to get him dressed! He's really too big for it now, but I hate to let it go!

  • I love our changing table. I hate that it takes up a bunch of space in DD2's not so big room, but it is worth it. I used it with DD1 until she was out of diapers, and still going strong at 18 months with DD2. Same reasoning though-3 dogs and they are always up in everything that's happening on the floor.
  • We added a changing pad to the top of a dresser in the nursery and used it ALL THE TIME.  For about the first 4 months or so we kept the changing pad option on the PnP on our main floor and used that as well, but I always preferred to go upstairs to his bedroom because that's where all my supplies were (we CDed, and even though I tried to be organized with multiple changing stations, it was much easier to keep everything together in one place).

Bonus cardio points for doing all those stairs (we live in a townhouse).

  • We are getting one for the same reason you are talking about. We have two dogs that are all up in our business (one that eats poop mind you!) as soon as we hit the floor. We are only purchasing a highboy dresser, not a low one, so we want something more stable than a go-anywhere changing pad. Plus the bottom portion will act as additional "shelving" which will be nice.

  • Changing pad on top of the dresser. When she started rolling/scooting off we moved it to the floor. At 15 months she pretty much gets up and runs away naked now and I put her diaper on in motion (sometimes it works, sometimes not so much).

  • Another reason I'm glad we have it - DH is really tall and it is more comfortable to lean over a taller table than our low dresser!

  • Had one never used it. Baby don't care where it's changed and honestly I found it easier to just lay out the changing map and change wherever whatever room we were in.

This makes me laugh... we also have a poop eater!

So glad our dog isn't the only weirdo our there! :D

  • We had one but a low dresser would have worked just as well. Of course, we ended up doing most diaper changes on the main level of the house anyway and just set up a make-shift changing station there. We trained our dog before the baby even came that when a certain blanket was on the ground, she had to back away and couldn't have even one paw on it. We called the command "Away" and gave her treats when she would back up and then lay down not on the blanket. It worked wonderfully once the baby was born because we could do diaper changes on the blanket or tummy time and the dog already knew not to step on the blanket. I highly recommend spending some time doing some basic training now to make life easier once you have the newborn in the house. It was well worth it!

  • I have a 2 story house. We used our PnP for in the living room till the girls started trying to roll a lot then we moved to the floor. Upstairs I bought a cushion change pad and have it attached to one of the dressers. We rarely use it now. We did in the beginning through the night and now we only use it after bath time and sometimes in the mornings.

  • Getting DH to make one with shelves and a drawer so that after were thru that stage it can be turned into self standing cute wood storage. Similar to this kitchen island he made just wider. Love that we're both so crafty (he would not approve of that word)
