Reflux and/or gassiness

My LO is 6 weeks old and has started getting really fussy immediately after feeding. He'll arch his back and neck and cry sporadically, and also gets gassy. He used to just spit up a lot but seemed happy, but now it's still not unusual for him to spit up several times after each feed and now he seems so uncomfortable. He also coughs sometimes and makes a face that looks like something came up into the back of his throat. I know he does swallow a lot of air at times due to my overactive letdown. Last night he cried after every MOTN feed and took a long time to get settled back to sleep.

I suspected reflux and took him to the pedi. She recommended probiotic powder twice a day and simethicone drops three times a day, more frequent, shorter feeds and more frequent burping. She also gave us some samples of Colic Calm gripe water and Tummy Calm. If none of these things seem to help we would consider prescription meds, but I would like to avoid that if possible.

Anyone else having or had these symptoms? What helps or what did your pediatricians recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Reflux and/or gassiness

  • Just did a post earlier about the probiotic. Only used it 1 night but it is seeming to work.

  • I have an overactive letdown and over supply issues. I'm only feeding on one side every 2 hours. I'm also taking her off the breast during letdown to help stop the choking/gagging. I've only been doing this for 3 days, but I've already seen some improvement.
  • Our little B has reflux and is on Reglan every 6 hours. He had a lot of the same symptoms as your lo. It sure made a difference for him GL!

My lo has started choking gagging as well as being extra gassy... The nurse hotline said extra burping. We have a pedi appt on Tuesday and will be grilling them ablut gagging, gassy, and reflux. She seems to have reflux but doesn't get it out and swallows it afainZ ;( ugh
She seemed to have reflux, where she'd gag and swallow after nursing and then make an awful face like she swallowed the spit up instead up actually spitting up. She also had super painful gas all day long. I talked to my pedi and they said it could be
reflux, but the choking/gagging at letdown was more likely the culprit.

So I met with a lactation consultant and she agreed with the pedi. I was told to try block feeding so she was getting more hind milk and not filling up on the foremilk which would be causing the gas.

So if your pedi rules out reflux, you might want to meet with a lactation consultant.
  • I'm worried that I have forceful letdown and oversupply as well.  LO is just 9 days old right now, but she's getting pretty gassy.  She doesn't burp a lot, but she passes gas so often, and it seems like her tummy hurts until she does.  But I also can't feel my let down, so I don't know what to do about it.  I'm going to contact a lactation consultant as well.
  • Thank you for the replies! I am definitely going to try pulling him off at letdown and waiting for the flow to slow down. My DS1 never had too much of a problem with the fast letdown but LO2 seems to be struggling more, so maybe that will help!

  • My little guy, I believe, has reflux. He's been on a probiotic for a bit and we've changed bottles to help with less air intake. Both have helped the gassiness/burping issues but he makes the gagging noises like stuff is coming back up. It's so sad :(
And this is after he burps like a champ after each ounce!
We go to the pediatrician Tuesday,

    Good luck, mommas!
  • My older daughter had terrible reflux and Zantac helped quite a bit. While I was breast feeding, cutting dairy from my diet helped with gassiness. When I switched to formula, dr browns bottles and smaller more frequent feedings helped. Having a too full belly really pushed up the acid for her.
  • DD was dx with reflux last week. After watching DD struggle with it for weeks before we realized what was going on (both kids have silent reflux) I am so happy to have him on meds. It's so awful to see them in so much pain!

What should I be looking for?
  • Same issues here my LO will choke after with some feedings and cry after like she's uncomfortable and spit up a lot with a little force behind it and she's on Dr. Browns pedi recommend shorter feedings also more frequent burps and to sit her in an inclined position as much as I can and have her up on my shoulder for at least 20 mins after feeds. It seemed to help a little bit. She seems to wolf down food sometimes.

They will frequently arch back like they are trying to escape the bottle..they will scream and cry while burping and eating, they will spit up very frequently and it's often accompanied by crying.
  • My daughter will gag well after feeding and make a yucky face like she has reflux or had a throw up burp that never makes it out. There's no spit up or anything just a gag or 2. I told my pedi and she said its normal for babies to have acid reflux becus they do not have the flap that holds food contents down in the stomach yet so if their over fed or some other reason it can come back up. Now my daughter isn't fussy when this happens so doc said not to worry, but it helped me understand that reflux is pretty normal in babies
  • I ended up bringing Camden in today because it was so terrible last night. We're going to try adding 2tsp of oatmeal to his 4oz bottle. It's supposed to weigh down his meals and hopefully gravity will help his food stay in his belly!

    Fingers crossed!
  • Is it ok to give the gas drops or grip water? Is that considered a medication ?
  • And the above from meat have been a VERY dumb question-
  • @babycaps Thanks for the informative post/link!
