I bombed a sugar test with a 199 they said automatic fail at 200 so I go Thursday for 3 hour but they talked to me like there is no hope? Is there? Can anyone relate?
"nelleebelle" You do realize that there is nothing you can do to pass it, right? And all you do is follow a diet and have extra appointments? I understand that the thought of having GD sucks but it's not the end of the world. You have like 2-3 months to follow a diet and then you still get a baby from the deal. It's seriously NOT THAT BAD.
This is ridiculous. This could be a major lifetime issue for both her &/or her child, so to blow her off with some snarky response is not helpful at all.
OP, you should be proactive now, & start making changes to your diet. Eat a little healthier, stay away from sugary treats & snacks. I failed mine with my last pregnancy, but passed the 3 hour test. I blamed the failed test on it falling 2 days after Halloween & my incurable sweet tooth lol
I think she meant no hope for passing the 3 hour test & that she is going to have GD, not no hope for her or her child. Could be wrong but that's how I read it
Either you will pass it or you won't. And if you don't it really is better for both you and the baby because you will follow a better diet. As a Type 1 diabetic, I definitely know that it sucks, but it is not the end of the world.
If you have access to a glucose monitor, check your blood sugar two hours after you eat to see how your body is metabolizing sugar. 70-90 is what my doctor likes to see it at 2 hours after I eat. You can also watch your carb intake to help. Also a fasting test would be good too.
I failed my 1 hour with a 150. I passed my 3 hour with flying colors. Just stay away from sugary stuff for the time being and wait to see how the 3 hour goes. (:

It's not uncommon to pass the three hour after failing the one hour. Also, it's out of your control & not a personal failing on your part. It's the way your placenta operates & nothing you can do. It is what it is.
I think it is unlikely you will pass the 3 hour, and I'm sure that's all you meant. The 3 hour is a pain, so you could just tell them you want to follow g.d. guidelines. Depending on how badly you fail the 1 hour, your chances of failing the 3 hour go up. Some places have an automatic 1 hour fail of 180. I passed the 1 hour at 134, and at my clinic, the fail is 135. I have to do the 1 hour again later in the pregnancy, and the doctor is already telling me to watch for symptoms. You can walk and eat a more diabetic diet, both of which are good for you either way. Those little strips are expensive, so wait for your doctor to approve so your ins will cover the glucose monitoring stuff unless you have one at home already. It's no fun, but you'll survive. It's kind of fun recording your numbers in the little book...
I would follow their recommendations on how to eat before the 3-hour test, and go take it and move forward from there based on the results. Who knows if you'll pass or not, but you certainly won't pass if you don't try.
I just took the 2 hr. My fasting blood glucose was 110, it should be below 95 tops so Im pretty sure my 2 hr will come back with me failing it.
Before I got pregnant I started to seriously start watching carbs, and types of sugars and I think it actually helped me feel much better and get pregnant faster. However I have fallen off the last month or so.
I plan on starting to follow a diet for people with GD regardless of the 2 hr result. It is a bummer if you end up having it, but its totally manageable (from what I hear) if you dedicate yourself. For me, my OB just really puts you through the ringer for the health of the baby if you are high risk or have G.D including weekly visits to a Maternal Fetal Medicine nurse, then later in the pregnancy, a stress test for the baby weekly in addition to the weekly visits with the MFM nurse, and weekly visit to the OB.
Good luck!

OMG whoever said they cut back on sweets to pass the 3 hour is an idiot. You can't game the system for a better result!! I have GD and I sometimes get pretty high numbers after eating a perfectly balanced meal. It's not your fault, OP. You will either pass or not because your placenta is making extra hormones, and knowing now will give you the tools you need to keep your blood sugar under control. Don't let that twit scare you with "lifelong problems" talk either. It IS manageable and it should not cause lifelong issues. The only thing I am worried about is this ups my risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life, but again I can manage that with lifestyle changes.
I've battled pre-diabetes for 12+years and at 8wks pregnant my endo jumped me to the GD category- which I completely expected. Due to being Dx with GD so early I got to skip the GTT (because I would have utterly failed!) but I've done it so many times prior to pregnancy, that I get what everyone is saying. I've even been victim to a 5 hour GTT- not fun at all!
My opinion, GD is manageable and temporary (for most). Things will become second nature; not saying it's always a cake walk, but like everything else, you adapt. Food diaries also really help. I've learned a lot about my diabetes via my own notes.
Bottom line, take it one day at a time and see how the 3 hour goes. Even if you pass the 3 hour, just keep in mind your 1 hour level was high so watch out for sugary, starchy, high carb and fried foods. Basically anything in the typical preggo craving category haha. Also if you have headaches post meals or find you have increased thirst, that could be a sign of high sugar. Just simple things to take note of.
All in all, your OB, endo or diabetes educator will have the best advice if you have concerns or follow up questions.

Don't despair.

As pps said there's nothing you can do to control the outcome of the test. It's judging how your body processes sugar.
