Do you go to the Circus?

Alex's class is going to the circus for school. I would not be a chaperone or sitting with the class.

I am thinking about taking Taylor out of school for the afternoon next Friday to take Taylor and Dylan.  Do you pull your kindergartner out of school to attend the same showing?  I will not pay to take all 3 of them to another showing.

Re: Do you go to the Circus?

  • One of the best days ever was when my mom let us skip school to go to the circus. I say do it! :)

  • Absolutely not because I don't agree with the circus. Aren't there reports of animal cruelty?
  • The circus makes me sad for the animals. I get uncomfortable watching dumbo. So my answer would be no, because I wouldn't want to sit through it.

  • I'm okay with going.  I have avoided it because it is a money pit.  It would be $36 for tickets and then a snack and a trinket...

Or do we skip it and have a lesson of how she gets to do something extra because she is a 2nd grader and they will get to do an extra field trip when they are her age?
  • While I'm not a fan of the circus itself, even as a teacher I never discouraged parents from taking their kids out of school for other activities. One day out if school is nothing in a lifetime, and there are more important lessons to learn from life experiences than a day of "common core", in my opinion. Do what you want, have fun, enjoy spending time with your children.

  • Skip it. I can't imagine spending that kind of money on the circus. No!
My only thought is that we only took the kids once and that was when Taylor was a year old.  So, it comes yearly and we have not been in 5 years.  With 2 potty trained kids I could do it alone too.
  • $36 is a lot, yikes! I'd skip it in that sense. Hadn't thought about the animal issues....only my happy childhood memories....now I feel like my innocence is lost. :(

No, not for the circus. I would not pull my kids out of a school trip or complain if someone wanted to take my kids to one though.

I cannot think of a potential field trip where I would pull the other child out of school to go along. However, my kids are still young so I haven't had a similar situation arise.

  • We go to the circus every year when it comes to town, so I am not opposed to the circus in any way. However, since it is a field trip I would view it as a special trip for your daughter. I would not pull the others out to go as well. Would they not go in a few years when they are older with school? I know when I taught, field trips were always the same each year.
  • I don't even like animals and I still won't go to the circus. Too depressing.
  • I am with Kate and hav, I don't particularly like animals and even I think the circus is cruel that aside I would not have one skip to go on a field trip with another.
