Crib choices- how important is it that they be similar?

We're expecting twins and are looking at crib choices.  When we were planning for our first, it somehow seemed important to get a really nice crib- this time around, it just doesn't seem as important (as long as it's safe and functions the way it's intended).  What I'm wondering is how important is it for the 2 cribs to be similar?  If one is a really nice solid wood crib, and the other is much smaller/ scaled back will it seem strange?  And perhaps more importantly, how concerned should I be about whether the mattress heights line up similarly (they'll probably be side by side- if one is significantly higher will it bother the twins/ could one be used to help the other climb out unless they're separated)?  We're considering a Graco Lauren and Ikea Gulliver.  We both like the idea of the scaled back simlicity of the Ikea- but the Graco looks more similar to the one we have, and has one more height adjustment than the Ikea (so the height levels might come closer to the one we have?)

Thoughts on whether it matters if the cribs are completely mismatched??

Re: Crib choices- how important is it that they be similar?

  • I think it is your preference. As long as both reach the safety standards that is all that should matter. We did the same because it made sense to us, but mis-matchy can be very cute, too. You maybe just want to make sure one is not too much smaller than the other because you don't one to grow out of their crib before the other.

Depends on how Type A you are. The only thing I cared about was that they were both the same in terms of safety. We used the crib from our older one and bought a new one for the other. They're both white because that's the color I prefer, but if they happened to be mismatched colors I wouldn't care. That stuff is just not important to me. But I know it can be for others.

  • Our cribs don't match. They're a light wood color and white. I couldn't find the same light wood crib and then they didn't have any I liked, so I went with white.

  • All cribs have the same mattress size (someone had commented about one kid outgrowing a crib first because of size) but they can be different heights and have different footprints. I'd still be a fan of finding a crib that converts to a toddler bed, as those are around the same price now but will save you money later. Other than that, go for what you like! Mismatchy could look cute... and it may help you remember who is who in the middle of the night when they wake up the zombie parents for a feeding.
  • It wouldn't bother me at all if they don't match, but I'm not at all type A.  FWIW, we have an Ikea Sundvik for DS and love it!  We will be getting two more of the same for the twins.  We wanted a modern looking crib that didn't cost a fortune.

Personally I couldn't handle them not being the same, it just my way. One of the first things we did was make certain they still made our son's crib, and bought a second one. Not sure what we would have done if it wasn't available., but that is just me.
  • We bought another crib that was the same as DD1s. But we got it from Wal-Mart so it wasn't a fortune. I guess it all depends on how expensive the first one was.

  • The kids won't notice. :) It's all your preference.

  • Thanks everyone! Does anyone have experience with the issue of different mattress heights? Or thoughts on how important it is for them to be right next to each other?
  • I'm type A so I need them to match. We already had a Graco Lauren (nothing fancy but it works!) in light wood and I found another NIB on CL in white for $60 which I was so excited about! We are going to paint the first one white so they match :)

  • We bought our cribs 6 months apart. The price of the original one went up a lot in the interim so they didn't end up matching. not even the same wood color. It bothered me a bit but we had a pretty simple mismatched nursery anyway. On the bright side, the crib colors matched their respective hair colors (blond and brown) which made it easy for baby-sitters to remember who went in which crib. ;)

That's actually a really good idea. I think that is what I would lean toward in your shoes.

Pretty sure they will be scarred for life if they have different cribs :)
  • I'm too type A and anal to not have them match...and DD (2.5) is still in her crib. She's never once tried to get out of her crib so we leave her in it. Plus hers is convertible so it will be a toddler bed and then a double bed and she'll have it forever.

But with poor second....and third kids.....we got them matching ikea cribs, plus a small dresser, plus bookshelves all for less than we spent on DD's cribs. But I actually love how the nursery is coming together and really happy with them.

but if DD wasn't still using her crib and we weren't going to convert it, and if i wasn't so type A, we'd have non matching cribs.

  • I'd prefer them matching but at te end of the day if it worked out that they didn't it wouldn't matter.
Do carefully measure stuff out though. Pre-furniture I kept looking at the nursery thinking "Oh we have tons of space" and once we got the cribs in, not so much. We have two Ikea Sundviks and I just told someone yesterday I'm really glad we went that route, not just because I prefer the simplicity of the style but because I can't imagine how we would fit in two if they had larger frames like what most people I know seem to have!

Yes! We had sketched everything out and thought I'd have more space than we did. So glad we went with the smaller footprint sundviks (and a closet system to save actual floor space). Once stuff gets in there it starts to get crowded quickly unless you have an enormous room.

  • Ours will be mismatched, I have the crib DS used that is wood and a friend is passing her white one along to us.  I was originally going to buy a second that matched DS but decided I just didn't care enough to spend the $300 on it.

  • Thanks everyone!

We're going for the mismatch- I just ordered the Ikea.

(Thank you in particular to the person who suggested getting out the tape measure- it turns out there's there's not much extra space along the wall we want to put both cribs against- with the Ikea it's a little more than a foot- given the need to separate the cribs a little from each other and an adjacent bookshelf- as it is we'll have a hard time opening the closet door- the Graco crib is 3-4 inches bigger and I didn't want to lose those inches.)
