I am 100% against sticky traps. I worked at a summer camp once and they used sticky traps and it was the worst thing ever. Hearing them scream because they're stuck and just have to wait for them to die. It was terrible.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
I'm with you, EllyD. I actually have been face to face with many a mouse, and I have gotten used to grabbing them by the tails and tossing them out the door. I have holes in my house and crumbs in my sink. (And possibly other places as I am a turrible housekeeper.)
Edit because I'm with the part where she wanted to deal with them humanely and I don't mean to insinuate that Elly D has any of my other issues.
We had an awful problem for a while. Luckily, our cats took care of them. I also got some of those devices that you plug in to the wall and they emit a sound that is supposed to keep them away. Haven't seen a single one since we got those in July 2011.
When we had them, I was doing a lot of research. I read that all they need is a hole they size of a pen and they can get in.

There was one time when I was living with 2 girls that we had a couple of mice in our house. They were totally ballsy and would just run around, so we called our landlord to get rid of them. He said the exterminator couldn't come until the next day, and one of my roommates and I decided we couldn't live that way. We got 2 bowls and attempted to catch them ourselves. However, when they would come out of their hiding place, my roommate would go after them and I would start screaming and run away (couldn't help it). We eventually realized that the mice were not scared of me at all, so we came up with a plan where my roommate would hide and I would let her know when the mice came out. It actually worked, and my roommate caught one of them under her bowl. We never saw the other one again (I guess that scared them). The next day the exterminator came and told us the poor mouse we caught died of hypothermia because it couldn't get to it's nest that night. We kind of felt horrible about that...
My cats are assholes. They will trap them and play with them! They seem to think it's fun to torture mice. I once woke up to this mouse screaming because my cat had it by its tail just fucking with it, not actually eating it. Like lucifer in Cinderella.
We used mouse traps with peanut butter or mouse attractant. nothing fancy (not the sticky traps) I just disposed of the bodies and after a few died they stayed away. We lived in an old house and they would get in underneath our kitchen sink. I feel like an asshole compared to the other responses, but I don't want to deal with a live mouse.
Dude I am all kill those fuckers NAO. We had a mice problem growing up in the country.
One time I was reading a book in my bed and got the feeling that somebody was watching me. I looked over and a freaking mouse was sitting on my bedroom floor just staring at me. Aww hellll naaaa. I didn't sleep right for weeks.
We had mice earlier this year. We plugged any holes we found and use those plug-in mouse repellent things. Haven't seen any since then. Agreeing with the no sticky traps thing, that's what our maintenance people recommended and I refused.

Having been a rat owner, I could never, ever use any kind of trap that kills a rodent, be it a mouse or rat. While we had pet rats in the home, we did have a little baby mouse visit us. Of course it's very different when a wild rodent enters the home, but DH and I trapped it and released it into our woods in the back. We've never seen another one since. But if we did, we'd trap and release again.
When I was little we had barn cats to keep mice out of the horse feed and other things we stored out there. We never had a problem with them in the house. I attribute this to the fact that the cats were super good at their job.
DH and I have never had an issue with mice (knock on wood and praying I didn't just jinx myself) but if we did I would do a live trap and release in a field or something. I can get behind the whole "cat eats mouse" food chain thing, but I watched Cinderella too much as a child. The idea of Gus-Gus in a kill trap makes me really sad. (I know this makes me sound crazy... Just ignore me)
