Bladder pain after ER?

I had my first ER this morning (9 eggs). 2 hours and 1500ml of fluids after the procedure I couldn't pee. I felt like I had to go, but every time I tried I couldn't and then it burned like hell when I was finally able to. The nurses kept giving me fluids, and wouldn't let me leave until I went. They didn't seem too concerned like it was a complication. They were going to do an ultrasound if I didn't go but since I was eventually able to they let me leave. I'm wondering is this a normal symptom? Now that I'm home several hours later. I'm still having the same pain when I try to go. Has anyone else experienced this before?

Re: Bladder pain after ER?

  • My ovaries were so swollen that they were pressing on my bladder (making it painful to pee) but I was peeing constantly! Probably because of all the fluid plus the fact that bladder had less room because it was being squished. I hope you feel better! Keep up on your fluids.

  • I had some discomfort urinating for several days after my ER. It doesn't sound as painful as yours. For a little while I wondered if I had a UTI. But it went away and all is well. I hope yours goes away as your ovaries heal.

  • They might have inserted a catheter to drain your bladder during the ER. I was cath'd during both of my retrievals, and it's irritating as all hell.

As long as it's just burning and irritation, that would be my guess. If you actually find yourself physically unable to urinate, though, call the doctor.

  • yes, I don't think an "inability to pee" is a normal side effect. In fact, I think it can be dangerous if you can't pee at all. I would call the doctor

  • AMEN!  I am STILL having difficulty with voiding and I'm on day 5 post ER.  I'm very full feeling and it takes a minute for the stream to flow and doesn't flow for long.  I am going often.  Too often.  It's not burning like a UTI - it's just annoying.  I got up at 1:30 am to go and was in so much abdominal pain that I was bent in half walking to the toilet.  I hope this subsides - it seems to be getting better - but I make sure there's always a toilet near.  I asked the RE at the ET this morning and he said it was "normal" and it would get better.  Because he has ovaries pressing on his bladder and knows what this feels like?  No.

    Good Luck!
