Does anyone not swaddle?

How's it working out for you?
How old is your LO?
Don't they punch themselves awake all night?

I don't swaddle LO for naps and she seems pretty comfy but I keep swaddling at night because I'm afraid if I don't she'll wake more often. DD#1 loved the swaddle so much I think I'm stuck in my ways because this LO doesn't seem to dig it as much. I'm trying to get the courage to try tonight. :)

Re: Does anyone not swaddle?

  • My girls won't settle unless they can have free movement kicking and their arms need to be out of the swaddle. They will squack and struggle until they have free movement again.

So we wrap them up in a 'swaddle' around the middle with a receiving blanket and they loosely with a warmer but light and soft blanket.  It is how they put the babies to sleep in the NICU.

    Works for us.

  • Harper hates being swaddled. She also hates having a blanket over her legs so we make sure she's clothed in layers at night and during nap time.

  • I'm in the same boat, OP. DD was so jumpy that she had to be swaddled so I swaddle DS at night now but he really doesn't seem to need or like it.
  • I don't anymore. Baby is 1w1d and he's on to footie pjs. He loved being all wrapped up for a little while, but now he's better being free!
  • Baby girl is a month old today and she started hating the swaddle around 2 weeks. We always swaddled her to bed, but she started getting pissed that she couldn't put her arms up. Now we just use a blanket at night :) she hast punched herself in the face or anything.

  • We stopped swaddling once Levi kept breaking free and the blanket would end up on his face in the night. He's too long for any of the swaddle blankets. He does best in those legless gowns.
  • We do the swaddle me with arms out. He doesn't flail as much as dd did so his hands don't seem to wake him up but he didn't like his arms in. He would struggle against it and wake up crying. He is 2w2d old and we have been doing it like this since day 3 when we got home. Once he outgrows the NB size swaddle sacks we will just use the regular sleep sack since he also doesn't seem to care about the swaddle part on his midsection either.
  • Thank you everyone! If I'm brave tonight and try it I'll let you all know how it goes.

  • We don't swaddled at all. Our daughter fights the swaddle until she gets her hands out. She sleeps just fine and doesn't startle herself awake. If she does she goes right back to sleep.

  • I wasn't swaddling but she wasn't able to stay asleep for long without it. Flailing she would wake herself up. We swaddle now and she slept on her own last night!!
  • Camden is not a swaddle fan! He loves to stretch but harms and legs and anytime I attempt a swaddle, he breaks free!
Much like when he was still inside and booting my ribs constantly....now I get it!
  • We swaddle at night, but not naps. I use the Aden and Anais blanket and love it!

  • DS is 7 days old. We tried swaddling the first couple of nights and it was rough he kept waking up crying. After 2-3 nights we tried just the sleep sack since during the day he isn't swaddled and slept great. Since we made the switch it's been so much better at night he only wakes to eat. DS1 didn't like being swaddled either. We tuck a blanket in on either side of his bed that covers his legs because his kicking would wake him up too.

  • We only swaddle if she's fussy. Most of the time she's very chill and sleeps fine without it. I do have a bunch of Aden + Anais muslin swaddle blankets, but I dont regret it- they're perfect nursing covers and all-purpose lightweight blankets. And they're way bigger than regular receiving blankets.

  • AJ needs his arms free or else he woun't sleep so we only wrap his legs up in his swaddle me blankets.

  • Madelena doesn't like to be swaddled. Her first few days she loved it but once she realized the freedom her arms and legs had she hated it..she actually sleeps with her arms up!
  • We swaddle with her arms out. She liked to have her hands on her face , sleeps much more soundly that way.

LO is a week old and we don't swaddle. He never really did like it much. He likes to stretch and move and hadn't really startled himself yet that I know of
  • Ok I was too chicken to try tonight. Soon though. Soon...

  • 3 1/2 weeks and we Swaddle with arms out. He likes his arms out better. He startles at times but it doesn't wake him up.
