California?

Yesterday I went to a networking meeting for women small business owners and met a really sweet woman from TN (but she has lived all over the US). I was talking to her about her move from TN to California. I mentioned I was a born and raised Californian and she made a comment about how unique Californians are and I should try live somewhere else in the country so I understand.

I wanted to ask her what she meant but the social part of the meeting ended quickly after that comment. So my question is for those of you have that have lived in California and moved to another state or moved from another state to California do you notice something "special" about California and it's residents?

Kind of a silly question but I am curious what you ladies think since some of you have made moves similiar to her.

Re: California?

  • Yes! Definitely. Californians or people who have lived there a substantial amount of time are their own breed (for lack of a better word)

I could think of more examples, but I'm too tired! Maybe tomorrow once I see some other responses lol

  • I was born in Los Angeles, and being a product of divorce I moved to the east coast with a parent when I was 12. I consider both the east and CA my homes, as I moved back to LA for 10 years after college (and still have family there). The thing is, it's hard to find native Californians. Especially in southern CA. Most people down there are from all over the map. I think this matters when determining that people from CA are different. I ran across a lot of people who were there to pursue a dream. Because of that people could be very humble and cool, or very ego-centric and tenacious. I've experienced as much kindness on both coasts, and maybe it's because I live in a small town out in BFE in New England again, but things tend to be more laid back here than LA.

  • @Snowboarderbritt‌, I feel like I am definitely a Northern Californian even though I have lived in both. I am in northern now. But you are right there is a difference.

@rsigler‌ and @nbcarlson‌, I apologize for my fellow Californians behavior. I swear we aren't all jerks.

@finnybooboo‌, I do agree that it is easier to eat healthy in CA because of work we have lived in NV and Northern Arizona for about three months each. The fruits and vegetables were definitely not as abundant as where I live now.

@MangoMama82‌, I think LA is a tough one because you do have so many people that move there and they aren't native to California so people are all over the map. I lived in OC and it was definitely not for me. I feel like we are more laid back then our southern counterparts.

  • My friend moved from Chicago to Escondido when we were 16. I spent a month there for a few summers. The differences I remember are healthier living, coke instead of pop, less makeup and smaller hair (this was the 80s), school in the summer and outdoor lockers. Everyone had an accent, compared to me. I thought people were nice though. I have been pushing DH to move there for several years. I can say coke machine.

  • Things I have noticed since leaving California:

People are more friendly and trusting out here (in Texas).  One time while my mom was visiting we pulled up to a convenience store and a man got out of his car, looked in ours and made some comment about how so many people fit into such a small car.  My mom instantly thought he was being rude and we had to assure her it was quite the opposite.

Drivers don't honk or whistle or yell stupid shit at pedestrians.  This one is huge for me because I hated walking any where.  This may also be area-specific, not all California.

Highways are just numbers.  I will never outgrow this.  I take the 35 to work and that is that.

    Indoor malls are weird.

People don't know how to drive in heavy traffic.  Sure the traffic in California is bad, I used to sit in at least an hour of traffic twice a day.  But at least those drives know how to drive.  I have never been nearly hit so many times in my life.  I don't know if this is particular to Texas drivers, but so many people just do what ever without any concern for other drivers on the road.  "I need to get over a lane, I will just cut over and if there is a car there already then tough cookies, they can get out of my way."  To build on this, semi truck drivers are absolutely INSANE.

With the exception of Mexican food, California does not know good cuisine.  Sure there are a few little mom and pops places that are good, but for the most part it is all chain restaurants.

Lol, I take it you have never needed to go shopping in -30 degrees, rain or snow?

    Nope!  #Ihaveneverseenrealsnow #onlyinmovies
  • The man and his family are originally from CA, and they are like night and day compared to me and my Texas born/raised family, most notably in the "manners/etiquette" department.

  • I am learning so much. #:-S

I definitely can agree that Californians get whiny went it gets too cold.

The malls I frequent are mostly indoor malls. But again that may depend on what part of CA you are in.

    @KuhaBaby‌, Ruby's is yummy.

@taylormarie923‌, your comment about food gave me the sads. But I may be spoiled because we live in a larger city now so we have more choices when it comes to restaurants. In our hometown we definitely had to work at eating at locally owned restaurants since there aren't as many.

I don't agree with his idea but I do think he correctly identified the 6 regions in CA that have their own "identities."

  • Oh and @beernifer, if you move to Asheville I will totally be your neighbor because that place looks and sounds amazing.  We can drink beer together and Dale and Eleanor can play together.

  • @rsigler, I am a confused by the "Californians don't know good food" sentiment as well but @crunchymama11 wasn't the only one to say that.  Of course in the smaller town we moved from the restaurant selection wasn't great BUT it was a small town.

We have the Napa/Yountville area.  But we also have Chez Panisse in Berkeley which then started an entire movement that extended throughout California (and beyond).  We also have some seriously amazing wines.
My only interests are drinking wine and judging people.

  • I have to agree on the good food comment.  With the exception of texmex, food is so much better out here.  BBQ, country diner, weird fusion, roach coach... they all blow anything in San Diego out of the water.  Whenever I travel back home, the only place I want to go is a taco shop.  There are zero restaurants that I am DYING to get back to.
  • Damnit now I am thinking about L&L Hawaiian BBQ and I need their rice.
  • I have family in both NorCal and SoCal, and they are much more superficial for name brands and they seem to pay for services more than doing things themselves (plumber, painting, eating out).

  • Hum, having lived in Florida and California, and now living in Arizona....I can deft say California knows good food; mainly because there are restaurants that serve seafood. #dontbecrazyyallseafoodisamust. I think northern and Southern California is different, but I wouldn't say California is more load back then Florida. #wedontknowwhatheelsareinflorida #15typesofflipflips

  • Being from California both Nor and SoCal I dislike this thread.

Yes, some people suck, but people suck everywhere.

I'm a wee but tipsy so I could go on forever but instead I choose to drink my wine and watch chopped allstars on the cooking channel!
  • @Arod1087‌, I hope it is a California wine. ;)

I am a farm loan officer in Kentucky and believe it or not, I have two customers from CA that bought land in Kentucky that I financed. As a non Californian.....yes totally different. Hard to explain, but anyone that meets them is like "ohhh, that is why they are different." Then the quarkiness is excepted. Lol
