Placenta Encapsulation

This topic came up on O14 and I wanted to ask you ladies about it.

Did anybody do it?
If so:
How expensive was it?
Do you feel it moderated your mood?
Do you feel it affected your milk supply?

I ask because supposedly it helps bolster milk supply. If that's true, I would seriously think about trying it this time.

Re: Placenta Encapsulation

  • I was going to but due to my complications and need for a hysterectomy they couldn't save mine. I was told the same things as you about the benefits of it.

The person who I was going to do mine is someone who I know and not just a company trying to make money, so I trust her opinion completely. She also does other natural remedies and care as well as works as a birth coach.  Her charge was around $250 for the capsules and a tinticure as well but I am in Canada so that may make a difference in costs.

For me and all the articles I have read about it I do feel that it would help with supply and that was going to be worth the money to give it a try because I really wanted to have a great nursing experience this time that I didn't get with my first two due to low supply.

I did it.  It was around $175.  I have no idea if it affected my mood, but I did have a major oversupply.  Not sure if it was just my boobs or the placenta.  I was pretty out of it for the first month or two - I don't remember much - so I'm not sure it did anything, but I was willing to try anything to ward of PPD since I have anxiety issues anyway and was at risk for PPD.
  • I didn't but wanted to. The hospital that I delivered at required a court order to release "medical waste" - the court order was $250. The encapsulation would have been $180 through the doula coop.
    Seriously?!  That is ridiculous.
  • This is all very interesting! I never knew sucha thing exsisted! Thanks for asking @cnj4eva
  • So I am watching last week's Teen Mom 2 and Kaylen's OB literally turned her off from encapsulating her placenta! He asked her why and she told him about the postpartum and milk supply benefits. He said that he has 100s of patients that don't eat their placenta and do fine with milk supply.

I couldn't believe his attitude! Shouldn't he support his patient's choices?

@Rea1687, I saw that. Whether or not he thinks it's beneficial he should have handled that better. He just shoved her off.
