Getting babies in the crib?

Ok I need some help! My babies are 15 weeks and they refuse to lay flat on their back. I've also let them get used to sleeping in the mammaroo or the swing so they kind of like the movement. I have tried the crib over and over and everytime they lose their crap within 10 mins. I will go in and put pacifiers back in and they will quiet for another 10 mins and then it all starts again. I really want to get them in their cribs consistently. I never had this issue with my ds. Have completely messed them up by letting them sleep in the swing ? Any advice or tricks would be appreciated!

Re: Getting babies in the crib?

  • My advice would be to start transitioning naptime to their crib first.  You can be more alert and patient during the day.  Swaddle them tightly so they still have a feeling to closeness.

  • Our twins also had a hard time sleeping flat on their backs. We did not transition them to the crib until they could roll over both ways (around 5 months) - we did a "rip the band aid off" approach and started sleep training at the same time we stopped swaddling and moved them to the cribs. They usually found their way to their stomachs and slept much better that way. It was brutal for a week but they figured it out quickly. Good luck!

  • I had the girls in r&p's until 4 months and had tried unsuccessfully to transition to the crib at 3 months. Finally I just let them be and waited another month and tried again and they did fine. Maybe they just need a little more time? I have heard it works for some to try doing naps in the cribs first so you may want to try that. Good luck !

    We inclined our crib mattresses.
  • As others have suggested I would start with naps first and maybe elevate the mattress with either a wedge or just put something under the mattress itself on one end to lift it slightly. How are they on the floor?

  • I'm of the mindset that if if it isn't easy, then they're not ready.

We tried transitioning my boys to cribs a few times before it stuck. They slept and napped in RNPs until 8mo or so. Starting at around 6mo, I'd try it for a nap or two or for night until their first wake up.

It didn't really ever take until they were just about 8mo. And it was easy bc they were ready and I didn't force anything.

Babies change so quickly that what works one month won't work the next. Their preferences change as they learn new skill, get older, change habits. They'll eventually sleep in their cribs.

I'm so glad you said this.  My girls are 5 months and we've tried a couple times to transition to the crib and they just didn't do well in there.  They will nap in there, but won't sleep longer than about 45 minutes in there.  I was getting worried that we'd never get them in there, but maybe they just weren't ready yet.  We'll try again in a month or so!

  • I agree that they will let you know when they are ready. I was avoiding this like the plague but last week I started noticing both girls fussing and acting really uncomfortable in their rock n plays and swaddles. Tested out a night in their cribs and they did amazing. Have now been in their cribs overnight for the past 4 nights and no swaddles! My girls are 5 months today :)
  • We inclined their mattresses with a blanket underneath and they both sleep in Magic Sleepsuits. They now sleep in their cribs from 10:30pm - 5:30-6am.

I'm one who believes the longer you wait the harder it will be.

  • We did the tilted bassinets and swaddle for about 4 months. I was worried about the transition too. It literally took about 3 days for them to adjust. My husband was begging me to bring the bassinets back out, but I stuck to my guns and it worked! They became 12 hour stomach sleepers! Lol. Just remember that it might take a few days. :)
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm gonna keep trying but not push it too hard because honestly my h and I need sleep too. They are in their room in the swing and mammaroo so we do have that going for us. I dread the day we can't use the swaddles anymore because they will only sleep swaddled. I'm thinking we can get another month or so tho out of them. They just hate to be flat on their back but they are going longer stretches in the play gym.
