19 week size difference

Yesterday I had an u/s with the MFM and baby A is measuring a week ahead while baby B is a week and a half behind. A is estimated to be 12oz and B at 7oz. The dr said B could just be smaller because she's a girl or it could be chromosomal. They drew blood for the Mat21 test. If you've dealt with this, please tell me there's hope my little girl could be ok.

Re: 19 week size difference

  • I personally don't have any experience with this...but I am sending thoughts and prayers your way everything is ok with baby girl!

I think we had our AS at a 18 weeks 5 days and both babies were about 10 oz...which is kind of in between the two of yours...

When do you go back to check on growth again?

  • Yes - don't panic! With di-di twins the size difference between the babies doesn't matter as much as long as each baby maintains a consistent growth curve. Did you have any first tri screenings?

  • At 20 weeks my boys measured within an ounce of one another 15 ounces and 14 ounces, but they started growing at a different rate around 28ish weeks. At one point there was a pound difference and at birth there was exactly two pounds difference in their weights. Today the peanut, D, is bigger than his brother by about 8 ounces. Try not to worry, I think everything will be okay.

  • If they are Di/Di, I would try not to compare the two. As long as they are both above the tenth percentile, there shouldn't be a need to worry too much.

As for mine, they were Mo/Di, so the difference in size was more concerning, and they look for more than 20% difference and one below the 10th percentile. B was off the charts he was so small, but both A and B are doing really well right now! They were 1# 4oz different at birth, and are now 2# different. Again, mine are Mo/Di, so we were working with a different set of potential outcomes.

As @PurpleIris30 wrote, if they are both still growing, try not to worry! I hope this helps!
  • Yes, I had the sequential screen which came back fine.

Hopefully, this can give you reassurance, too. I'd bet everything is fine, but sounds like your doctor is on top of ruling things out for peace of mind.

  • I have di/di b/g twins too. My girl is much smaller than my boy almost a whole pound at 31w. They're a little concerned, but only because baby boy is so big they worry he could restrict her growth. Right now they're both above 50th percentile though so as long as they keep growing at a good rate they're fine. Overall though baby girl has been much smaller than baby boy through the whole pregnancy. Doctors say that it's because she's a girl she's more petite. :) good luck to you! Try not to worry.

  • This exact same thing happened to our friends who are expecting boy/girl twins a few months before us. Baby A (their girl) was a week behind Baby B. They had her come back for extra scans for a few weeks and everything looked fine, but she is still smaller than her brother.

I have di/di b/g twins. They had been right on par with each other throughout, but as of 26 weeks the boy went up to the 60th percentile and the girl was 40th. I asked about that, and they said basically as long as they are both in the healthy range individually, we shouldn't worry. And boys tend be on the bigger side anyway. But they would keep an eye on it.

I'd try not to worry about it, but good vibes coming your way.
