Thyroid meds and explosive poops

So random and not even sure of this will connect with anyone else but... Our babysitter observed today that LOs poops are more normal than they have ever been and we finally got rid of a nasty diaper rash, often irritated by his poop after a month. He is 8m and EBF/BM (I pump at work).

The only thing that changed is my thyroid meds. My dosage was lowered (My TSH was too low for once!) and my Dr. had me take a break from them last week. All is back to normal. My BFF/babysitter always said his poop was weird (didn't smell like "buttered popcorn") but did today and wasn't as loose as it's been.

Random but anyone else have thyroid issues and baby with explosive poops and constant rashes. Just curious....

ETA- We even stopped solids (which he hated anyways) to avoid more things to irritate and aggravate his rash.

Re: Thyroid meds and explosive poops

  • Well I think I was hyperthyroid for a while, which is why my doc cut my dosage. So maybe that was it. I'm on naturethroid and my t4 was a little high, t3 reverse high and my antibodies were through the roof (I just normalized them too, with a huge dietary change :( Just curious to see if there was a correlation between thyroid issues and LOs issues. Thanks :)

  • I am on low dose thyroid med.  You didn't say what you are taking, but... I sincerely doubt it has any affect on LO's poop.  Most thyroid meds are very similar to natural hormones and would be unlikely to enter BM in any significant quantity or to affect LO even if if they did.

  • Just weird timing I guess. My friend is the one who pointed it out. I thought it was odd that everything got better when my meds changed. I'm on naturethroid. I didn't think that the meds had any effect on my LO but just thought I'd ask anyways.

  • I too take synthroid for my thyroid issues, but I don't think it has anything to do with LO bm patterns. Sometimes her bm are more acidic and we battle rashes, but I've been told that has to do with what I eat as well as the fact she started teething. You said you stopped solids so maybe it has to do with adjusting to that?

  • @AmyG*‌ The diet changed from before I got pregnant so I don't think that's it. I gave up gluten and dairy (my fav foods are bread and cheese:( ) I've lost about 30lbs, even at the beginning of my pregnancy (so about 45lbs combined). And all my horrible stomach issues (for 12 yrs!) are gone as well.

My thyroid is much happier and lowering my meds to possibly get off them is the goal. The diet helped with my antibodies so I'm not sure what happened. The occasional splurge isn't enough to affect it that much. I miss cheese....

Could be the solids, maybe his body is ready now.

    Thanks everyone!
